Some films may not strike gold upon release, yet they linger in memory rediscovered, re-evaluated, and re-loved by audiences over time. One such film is Ra.One, Anubhav Sinha’s ambitious 2011 sci-fi superhero spectacle that, fourteen years later, continues to find relevance among fans who now demand a sequel.

Marking the film’s 14th anniversary, director Anubhav Sinha took a nostalgic walk down memory lane. He shared a series of behind-the-scenes photos from the making of Ra.One, featuring him alongside Shah Rukh Khan during the film’s shoot. The pictures radiate the excitement and scale of one of Bollywood’s most technologically daring projects of its time.

Sharing the memories on Instagram, Sinha wrote in Hindi, “इस फ़िल्म के कुछ दिन इतने अविश्वसनीय हैं कि फोटो देख के लगता है कि क्या ये हुआ था मेरे साथ।” (“Some days of this film are so incredible that when I look at these photos, it feels surreal that it really happened to me.”)

Released in 2011, Ra.One was a visual extravaganza years ahead of its time. The story followed a video game villain, Ra.One (Arjun Rampal), who escapes into the real world to eliminate the player who almost defeated him a young boy named Prateek (Armaan Verma), the son of the game’s late creator, Shekhar Subramaniam (Shah Rukh Khan). To protect his family, the game’s hero, G.One, also crosses into reality, setting the stage for a high-tech battle between good and evil.

Alongside Shah Rukh Khan in a dual role, the film featured Kareena Kapoor as the protective mother Sonia, and a supporting cast that included Shahana Goswami, Dalip Tahil, Satish Shah, and Tom Wu. Arjun Rampal’s menacing portrayal of Ra.One remains one of the film’s most memorable highlights.

Produced by Gauri Khan under Red Chillies Entertainment, Ra.One was one of India’s most expensive films at the time and showcased cutting-edge visual effects, motion capture, and 3D technology that rivaled Hollywood productions. While it received mixed reviews upon release, the film has since gained a cult following, especially among younger audiences who grew up fascinated by its futuristic world and SRK’s superhero avatar.

The anniversary post from Sinha comes at a time when many fans online are calling for Ra.One 2. Social media has seen renewed discussions around how the film’s concept of artificial intelligence and gaming technology now feels strikingly prophetic in today’s digital era.

Beyond revisiting his blockbuster, Anubhav Sinha recently announced a new journey — a nationwide tour aimed at understanding the changing relationship between audiences and filmmakers. Sharing his thoughts, he noted that the gap between what creators imagine and what audiences crave has widened in recent years, and he wants to bridge that divide through conversation and connection.

As Ra.One turns 14, it stands as more than just a film — it’s a reminder of creative courage, technological innovation, and the ever-evolving bond between cinema and imagination. And for Anubhav Sinha, it remains a personal milestone, one that still makes him pause, smile, and wonder, “Did that really happen to me?”
