Actress Mrunal Thakur is stepping into an all-new avatar with Son of Sardaar 2, a sequel to the 2012 Ajay Devgn starrer. At the film’s trailer launch event, Mrunal shared her excitement — and a little disbelief — about entering the world of loud comedy, high-octane drama, and all-out masala entertainment.
“This is my first commercial film,” Mrunal said at the event. “Honestly, I never thought I’d do something like this. But Ajay sir and Dadu (producer Ashwni Dhir) came together and gave me this opportunity. I’m so grateful.”
In the film, she plays Rabia — a character that took her far out of her comfort zone.
“I couldn’t imagine myself as Rabia at first. And on top of that, I had to keep torturing Jassi [Ajay Devgn's character]. I kept wondering — can I really pull this off?”
Reminiscing about watching the original Son of Sardaar with her cousins, Mrunal recalled, “I’d watched the first part with my cousins and really enjoyed it. So being part of the sequel is surreal.”
The collaboration with Ajay Devgn was a long time coming.
“There were scripts that came our way earlier, and we always wanted to work together. But things never aligned — sometimes I was working in the South, sometimes dates didn’t match. But when this script came to me and I heard the one-liner, I instantly said, ‘I have to do this!’”
The film was shot in a single go over three months in Scotland — a challenging yet fulfilling experience for the actress.
“There were ups and downs at home while I was shooting, and since this was a comedy, the pressure was real. I’d never attempted this genre before. But I made it through... and I truly enjoyed it.”
Reflecting on this bold new chapter in her career, Mrunal added, “I’m just so excited because this is a completely different avatar. I don’t think anyone has ever seen this version of me before.”
The film is slated to release on 25 July, 2025.
