Roadside Attractions has unveiled the official trailer for Twinless, an offbeat and emotionally layered romantic dramedy written and directed by indie filmmaker James Sweeney. Set to release on September 5, 2025, the film explores unexpected connections formed through shared grief — with a twist.
Starring Dylan O'Brien and James Sweeney as Roman and Dennis respectively, Twinless follows two young men who meet at a support group for people who have lost their twins. Their initial bond is rooted in mutual pain and a search for identity, but what starts as camaraderie soon shifts into deeper territory. When Roman grows close to Dennis’ vibrant co-worker Marcie (played by The Nightingale's Aisling Franciosi), emotional boundaries blur and long-held secrets threaten to unravel their fragile friendship. Rounding out the cast is Lauren Graham, adding emotional depth as a group facilitator with her own buried grief.
The trailer sets the tone for a genre-bending indie — awkward, tender, and quietly suspenseful — that tiptoes between humor and heartbreak. With its unique premise and stylized dialogue, Twinless is poised to appeal to fans of nuanced character studies and LGBTQ+ narratives, reminiscent of Sweeney’s previous work (Straight Up, 2019).
Critics who caught early festival screenings have praised Twinless for its smart writing, emotional resonance, and unconventional take on male vulnerability. The film is expected to be a standout among fall indie releases.
