Netflix’s satirical gem Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery has been awarded Best Hindi Film at the 71st National Film Awards, cementing its place as one of the most celebrated Indian films of 2023. Directed by debutant Yashowardhan Mishra, starring Sanya Malhotra, and produced by Sikhya Entertainment and Balaji Telefilms, the film proves that small-town stories with big hearts can strike a national chord.
Inspired by a bizarre real-life news report, Kathal unfolds in the fictional town of Moba, where a police officer is tasked with recovering two missing jackfruits from a politician’s garden. What follows is a sharp, humorous, and heartfelt look at the misalignment of priorities in small-town bureaucracy. The film’s unique tone—balancing satire with social commentary—was lauded by jury member and filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker, who praised it for “peeling back the absurd layers of bureaucracy with deliciously sharp satire.”
At its core, Kathal is powered by Sanya Malhotra’s compelling portrayal of Mahima Basor, a sincere and spirited police officer, supported by a talented ensemble including Rajpal Yadav, Vijay Raaz, Anantvijay Joshi, and Neha Saraf. The script, co-written by Yashowardhan Mishra and his father Ashok Mishra, blends wit, social insight, and authenticity—offering a rare narrative grounded in rural India but universally resonant.
This win is yet another landmark in Netflix India’s journey of championing rooted Indian storytelling. The streamer has previously received global recognition with titles like The Elephant Whisperers, Delhi Crime, and Vir Das: Landing. Kathal adds to this legacy, reflecting Netflix’s commitment to stories that are meaningful, bold, and distinctively Indian.
Expressing his gratitude, director Yashowardhan Mishra shared, “This honour is reaffirming. I’m grateful to the jury and to my collaborators at Sikhya, Balaji, and Netflix. This film was a labour of love by every cast and crew member.” Monika Shergill, VP - Content at Netflix India, added, “Kathal is a story told with rare wit and authenticity, and this win is a proud moment for everyone involved.”
