Brace yourselves—winter is coming, and it’s not here to play nice. Vertical has just released the trailer for Dead of Winter, an icy survival thriller set against the unforgiving whiteout of Minnesota’s backcountry. Directed by Brian Kirk (of Luther and Game of Thrones fame), this film promises a chilling mix of suspense, isolation, and snowy savagery. It’s hitting theaters on September 26, 2025, just in time to make you rethink that cozy cabin getaway.
Leading the snowstorm of suspense is none other than Emma Thompson—yes, the Oscar-winning queen of eloquent heartbreak—now donning a parka and plunging headfirst into psychological horror. She plays a grief-stricken loner trying to outrun her own pain, only to find herself snowed in and stumbling upon a horrifying situation: a kidnapped woman, two armed lunatics, and no cell signal to scream for help.
Judy Greer and Marc Menchaca flip the script as the sinister couple from hell, hiding in a remote cabin with some very, very dark intentions. And rising star Laurel Marsden plays the abducted woman whose only shot at survival lies with Thompson’s emotionally shattered but unexpectedly fierce character. You didn’t think Emma Thompson could pull off gritty survivalist vibes? This trailer begs to differ.
Written by Nicholas Jacobson Larson and Dalton Leeb, the story blends classic cabin-in-the-woods dread with an emotionally charged rescue mission that turns into a white-knuckle, edge-of-your-seat experience. Think Fargo meets Room, with a little The Revenant sprinkled on top. Cold, claustrophobic, and completely unnerving.
Dead of Winter could be the surprise genre breakout of the year. With its powerhouse cast, snowy tension, and moral twists buried deeper than a frozen lake, it’s definitely one to watch—preferably under a blanket, with all the doors locked.
