Prime Video has finally dropped the official trailer for The Girlfriend, an intense 6-episode psychological thriller based on the bestselling novel by Michelle Frances. Releasing on September 10th, 2025, this dark, slow-burn drama explores the razor-thin line between protection and paranoia — all wrapped in a tale of maternal obsession and hidden motives.
Robin Wright leads the series as Laura, a woman who seems to have it all: a successful career, a doting husband, and a son she adores. But her picture-perfect world begins to crack when her son, Daniel, brings home his new girlfriend — Cherry, played by Olivia Cooke. While Cherry appears charming on the surface, Laura senses something more sinister beneath the smile. What follows is a dangerous power struggle, with secrets, manipulation, and mistrust bubbling just below the surface.
The trailer teases a battle of wits between two strong women, each convinced they're protecting Daniel from the other. Is Cherry a scheming social climber or just a young woman trying to find love in a judgmental world? Is Laura being protective — or possessive to the point of madness?
With a supporting cast including Laurie Davidson, Waleed Zuaiter, Leo Suter, Francesca Corney, and Anna Chancellor, the series promises rich performances and layered storytelling. The series is co-directed by Andrea Harkin and Robin Wright herself, adding even more depth to Wright’s already compelling character.
Created and written by Naomi Sheldon and Gabbie Asher, with a team of additional writers, The Girlfriend is shaping up to be more than just another family drama — it’s a gripping psychological ride through love, control, and the terrifying power of perspective.
If you're a fan of Big Little Lies or Behind Her Eyes, this one might just be your next obsession.
