Just when you thought cinema couldn’t get any more bizarre—in comes Yorgos Lanthimos with Bugonia, his latest genre-bending fever dream, and it’s already shaping up to be one of the most talked-about films of the year. Focus Features has unveiled the official trailer for Bugonia, a sci-fi conspiracy thriller and English-language remake of the cult South Korean film Save the Green Planet! The film makes its world premiere today at the 2025 Venice Film Festival, with reviews expected to follow shortly.

Reuniting with his longtime collaborators Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, Lanthimos dives headfirst into a story that flirts with the line between delusion and truth. In Bugonia, two paranoid conspiracy theorists abduct Michelle (played by Stone), a pharmaceutical CEO they believe is an alien orchestrating Earth’s downfall. As expected from a Lanthimos creation, the trailer hints at dark absurdism, cryptic moral ambiguity, and a tone that veers between menace and hilarity—making it impossible to guess what’s coming next.

The film also stars Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias, and Alicia Silverstone, adding further texture to this chaotic ensemble. Screenwriter Will Tracy (known for Succession and The Menu) adapts the original Korean screenplay, promising a blend of biting satire and psychological unravelling. With producers including Ari Aster, Emma Stone, and Lanthimos himself, Bugonia sits comfortably at the intersection of indie prestige and experimental genre cinema.

This marks Lanthimos’ follow-up to Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness, and if the trailer is any indication, Bugonia might just be his strangest yet. Known for pushing the boundaries of storytelling, the Greek auteur seems to be using the sci-fi premise to probe deeper into human irrationality, collective paranoia, and the chaos of modern power structures—while never losing his signature off-kilter tone.

Bugonia is set for a limited theatrical release on October 24th, 2025, before expanding nationwide on October 31st. Expect this to be one of those films you’ll want to discuss the moment it ends—if only to figure out what the hell you just watched.
