In a heartfelt conversation, Vinay Sapru and Radhika Rao, the creators of the film Sanam Teri Kasam, discussed the surprising re-release success of their movie, which did not fare well upon its initial release nearly nine years ago. Today, it is making waves at the box office, breaking records as it reaches new audiences who are celebrating it in ways that were once unimaginable.
As the filmmakers reflect on this unexpected turnaround, Sapru shared how deeply the project resonated with them, saying, "When any writer writes, or a director works, it becomes part of their soul. Today at the rerelease of the film, it feels like the nation is now coming together to celebrate our work."
The film, which was written a decade ago, had always been their dream project. Rao explained, "The inspiration comes from above. We thought we would write an everlasting love story. We always knew what would happen in the climax, and then we started creating the characters of Inder and Saru. You sit down with passion, think deeply, and first and foremost, you fall in love with the characters and the story. With the blessings of Goddess Saraswati, you just keep writing."
Their approach to storytelling, they revealed, has always been unique. "Our storytelling is from a different world. Generally, love stories feature a rich person and a poor person, or there’s an opposition of caste. But we didn’t want to write a story like that. We thought about how everyone could identify with it."
For Sapru and Rao, the story’s roots were inspired by the ancient texts. "We had the Shiv Puran in our hands. If the wedding of a daughter is not blessed by the father, it cannot be successful. The story of Mahadev and Shakti inspired us. We knew this would inspire the audience, too. This is a tale of eternal love, spanning lifetimes."
The filmmakers also revealed that they had always planned the film as a two-part saga. "We had written both parts together. Their journey – Inder and Saru’s – continues in part two. We had written four love stories in total," Sapru shared.
Looking ahead, they teased the next chapter of their journey. "One of our films will surely come out on Valentine’s Day in 2026. A promise will come... but which promise it will be, we don’t know yet."
This re-release of Sanam Teri Kasam is a celebration not only of a love story that has found its audience but also of the filmmakers’ unwavering belief in their craft and vision.
