Taapsee Pannu is an Indian model and a popular actress who mainly works in the South Indian film industry. She has appeared in movies across different languages including Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Malayalam and has enjoyed great success. A software engineering graduate, Taapsee began her career as a model and won several titles such as Pantaloons Femina Fresh Face and Safi Femina Miss Beautiful Skin in 2008. The actress who made her acting debut with the Telugu film, Jhummandi Naadam in 2010 has appeared in several critically acclaimed and commercially successful movie like Vastadu Naa Raju (2010), the six National Film Awards winning movie Aadukalam (2011), Mr. Perfect (2011) and Baby (2015).
Early Life
Born and brought up in New Delhi, Taapsee Pannu comes from a Jat family. The actress has a younger sister, Shagun Pannu and shares a very close bond with her. She completed her schooling from Mata Jai Kaur School in Ashok Vihar, Delhi and later pursued her graduation in software engineering from Guru Tegh Bahadur Insitute of Technology in New Delhi. Before the actress forayed into the film industry, she worked as a software engineer. While she was working, she auditioned for the Channel V`s talent show, Get Gorgeous and was selected to become a full-time model, which eventually lead the way for a career in acting. During her modeling days, she has modeled for various brands like Coca-Cola, Motorola, Standard Chartered Bank, Tata Docomo, Havells, PVR Cinemas, Airtel, and Dabur.
Movie Career
Taapsee Pannu started her acting career in 2010 with K. Raghavendra Rao`s Jhummandi Naadam. The movie co-starring Manchu Manoj Kumar and Mohan Babu opened to mixed reviews and was an average earner. The following year, the actress made her Tamil film debut with the critically acclaimed Aadukalam directed by Vetrimaran. The movie also featured Dhanush in the lead role was set in the town of Madurai and revolved around cockfights. The movie went on to win six National Film Awards at the 58th National Film Awards.
The actress returned to the Telugu film industry with Vastadu Naa Raju, which released in February 2011. The movie co-starring Vishnu Manchu and Prakash Raj was an average hit. She next appeared in her maiden Malayalam film opposite superstar Mammootty and Nadhiya in Doubles. Her next film in 2011 was Mr. Perfect alongside Kajal Aggarwal and Prabhas, which was a moderate success. Taapsee`s other releases of the year Veera and Mogudu failed to impress the audience as well as the critics.
In 2013, the actress starred in a Telugu-Tamil bilingual film titled Gundello Godari and Maranthen Mannithen directed by Kumar Nagendra and produced by actress Lakshmi Manchu. The Telugu version of the movie got a positive response at the box-office and it was also nominated for the Best film at the International Indian Film festival in South Africa. Her other Telugu release of the year was Meher Ramesh`s Shadow, which also had Daggubatti Venkatesh in the lead role. The movie got mixed critical reception and was an average earner. In the same year, she made her Bollywood debut with David Dhawan`s comedy film titled Chashme Baddoor. The movie, which was the remake of the 1981 film with the same title got positive reviews and was a commercial success. Her last movie of the year was an action-thriller Tamil film titled Arrambam alongside Ajith Kumar and Arya. She won the Most Enthusiastic Performer-Female Award at the 2014 Edison Awards.
With no releases to her name in 2014, Taapsee Pannu made a smashing comeback in the critically acclaimed Hindi movie, Baby directed by Neeraj Pandey. The film, which also starredAkshay Kumar Rana Daggubati, Anupam Kher and Danny Denzongpa had the actress playing the role of an undercover agent. Taapsee had two more Tamil film releases in the same year viz. The horror comedy Kanchana 2 along side Raghava Lawrence and Vai Raja Vai directed by Aishwarya Dhanush where she appeared in a guest role. In 2016, Taapsee was seen in Shoojit Sircar`s drama-thriller alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Pink, which went on to become, both, a commercial and critical success. Taapsee had her ups and downs in 2017. Her first outing of the year was Running Shaadi produced by Shoojit Sircar. The film was about a group of friends who help people elope to get married. Though the plot was unique, it didn`t help the film at the ticket windows. Her next was a bilingual titled The Ghazi Attack, with a very brief role, she managed to leave an impact.
After that, she played the title role in Naam Shabana. The film was a spin-off from her previous film Baby (2015). She also did a Telugu comedy horror film titled Anando Brahma, which opened to positive response and was declared a hit by the trade pundits. Her final outing of the year was Judwaa 2, a remake of Salman Khan`s 1997 blockbuster Judwaa. History repeated itself as Judwaa 2 was a money-spinner like its predecessor. Her 2018 projects include Dil Juunglee, Soorma, Mulk, Manmarziyaan, and Tadkaa, which marks the Hindi directorial debut of National award-winning actor Prakash Raj. Her other releases include Badla , Game Over. Saand Ki Aankh and Thappad. She won a Filmfare Award for Best Actress for Thappad. She then featured in Haseen Dillruba and Rashmi Rocket which were both released on digital platforms. She then featured in the Looop Lapeta (2022), Mishan Impossible (2022), Dobaaraa (2022), Shabaash Mithu (2022), Blurr (2022), Dunki (2023), Woh Ladki Hai Kahaan? (2024) and Phir Aayi Haseen Dillruba (2024).
