Indian filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri has strongly criticized the recently announced 100% movie import tariff by American President Donald J. Trump, calling it a "disastrous move" that could severely harm India’s already struggling film industry.

Taking to social media, Agnihotri posted: “ALERT: Trump's 100% Movie Tariff Threatens Indian Cinema: Trump's 100% tariff on movies is a disastrous move. If this absurdity prevails, India's struggling film industry will collapse entirely, with no one to save it. Indian film leaders must wake up, unite, and fight this threat instead of chasing paparazzi and self-glorification.”

The statement comes in response to Trump’s declaration, in which he framed the new tariff as a national security measure aimed at reviving the American film industry, which he claims is being undercut by foreign incentives and propaganda.

Trump wrote: “The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death... Therefore, I am authorizing the Department of Commerce and the United States Trade Representative to immediately begin the process of instituting a 100% Tariff on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands. WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!”

The proposed policy could have wide-ranging implications for the global film market, especially for countries like India that export films and entertainment content to the U.S. regularly. Indian films, particularly Bollywood and regional cinema, have carved out a solid audience in the U.S., and such a tariff could severely limit that access.

Agnihotri’s call for unity within the Indian film fraternity underscores growing concern that global protectionist policies might create serious economic and cultural setbacks for non-Western cinema industries. As the situation unfolds, industry stakeholders and trade officials will likely seek dialogue and diplomatic resolution to avoid a full-scale disruption in cross-border entertainment exchange.
