On the 108th birth anniversary of the legendary M.S. Subbulakshmi, Bollywood actress Vidya Balan has honored the iconic musician with a deeply personal and visually stunning tribute. In a video shared on social media, Balan pays homage to Subbulakshmi, recreating her classic look and celebrating her enduring legacy in a photographic tribute.

M.S. Subbulakshmi, born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, was a musical prodigy who began her Carnatic music training at a young age. Her early performances at just 13 showcased her exceptional talent, and she soon earned the title of "Queen of Music" from Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and the epithet "Nightingale of India" from Sarojini Naidu. Her contribution to Indian music was profound, with a career spanning several decades until her passing at the age of 88.

In her heartfelt post, Vidya Balan wrote, “On her 108th birth anniversary, I feel honoured and overjoyed to be able to pay a photographic tribute to 'BHARAT RATNA' M.S. Subbulakshmi (M.S. Amma), famously referred to as The ‘Queen of Music’ by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and as the ‘Nightingale of India’ by Sarojini Naidu.”

Balan’s tribute features a re-creation of the iconic sarees and accessories that Subbulakshmi popularized from the 1960s to the 1980s. The tribute meticulously showcases four sarees worn by Subbulakshmi, capturing the essence of her concert persona and the simplicity that defined her style. Alongside the sarees, the video highlights the traditional kumkumam and vibhuti on her forehead, her distinctive nose pins, and the jasmine-adorned bun that were quintessential to her appearance.

Vidya Balan expressed her gratitude to those who helped make this tribute possible: “Many a THANK YOU’s are due in the realization of this heartfelt endeavour. Thank you so much @sikkilmala ma’am (renowned flautist and granddaughter-in-law of M.S. Subbulakshmi) for your invaluable guidance & insights. And how can I thank you enough @anuparthasarathy for coming up with the idea of doing this when I expressed my long cherished dream to play M.S. Amma. I appreciate your passion for detail and your patience over 7 years in seeing this through to fruition… Nandree Anu ma’am.”

Through this touching homage, Vidya Balan not only honors the memory of M.S. Subbulakshmi but also brings her legacy to life for a new generation to appreciate and admire.
