Veteran actor R. Madhavan, known for his enduring charm and emotionally resonant performances, is returning to his romantic roots with the upcoming Netflix film Aap Jaisa Koi. At the trailer launch event, Madhavan spoke candidly about his role in the modern love story, sharing how rare and rewarding it is for actors his age to portray romantic leads in a way that feels both authentic and age-appropriate.
When asked what drew him to the project, Madhavan reflected on his evolution as an actor in the romance genre. He said, “My journey of romance started with Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein, even at that time, how young people express love and experience it, I tried to portray that, and after so many years I am doing a romantic story again. In between, I did Tanu Weds Manu, which was also age appropriate. With this Aap Jaisa Koi, I got to work with people who are beautiful from the inside, they have a beautiful heart, they are very kind, and love the craft, and to be able to go on sets with so much love, it’s a blessing for an actor.”
Madhavan, now in his 50s, emphasized the emotional depth of playing a romantic role that matches his own life stage, adding, “And to be on sets, with such good people, and narrate a love story, which is age appropriate—very few actors get such an opportunity. When I heard the script, and I found out that I am playing the role of a 40 years plus man, I thought to myself, even they should also have a love story.”
When asked to sum up his experience making the film, he simply said, “Fulfilling love, the kind of love that fills your heart.”
Directed by Vivek Soni (Meenakshi Sundareshwar), Aap Jaisa Koi is a mature, layered romantic drama that explores love through the lens of individuality, emotional vulnerability, and equality. Madhavan stars as Shrirenu Tripathi, a Sanskrit professor who meets Madhu Bose (played by newcomer Shaikh) through an arranged marriage setup. What begins as a traditional meeting slowly unfolds into a modern story of emotional growth and questioning societal expectations.
Produced by Karan Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment, the film also features Ayesha Raza, Manish Chaudhari, and Namit Das in pivotal roles. With a storyline that weaves together themes of cultural differences, patriarchy, and personal agency in relationships, Aap Jaisa Koi aims to speak to audiences across generations.
The film is set to premiere globally on July 11th on Netflix, promising a story not just about finding love, but about redefining it — at any age.
