The Mushroom Kingdom is headed to space! Universal Pictures and Illumination have officially announced the sequel to the blockbuster 2023 film, and it’s titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Arriving in theaters worldwide on April 3rd, 2026, this new adventure takes Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser on an intergalactic journey inspired by one of Nintendo’s most beloved games: the 2007 classic Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii.
The fan-favorite voice cast is back: Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. And just like in the original games, expect plenty of new characters to pop up along the way—though the studio’s keeping some surprises under wraps for now.
Behind the scenes, Illumination is sticking with the winning formula. The film will once again be co-directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, with Matthew Fogel penning the screenplay. Producers Chris Meledandri and the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto are also back, ensuring this sequel stays true to the heart of Nintendo’s universe while pushing the story into bold new directions.
With The Super Mario Bros. Movie raking in over $1.3 billion worldwide, the pressure is on to deliver an even bigger and more creative follow-up. But mixing the cosmic wonder of Super Mario Galaxy with Illumination’s humor and vibrant animation may just be the power-up this franchise needs. Fans everywhere are already counting down the days—and probably practicing their best “Wahoo!” in anticipation.
