Veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai recently launched his memoir, Karma’s Child, co-written with journalist and author Suveen Sinha, at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Mumbai. The memoir, published by HarperCollins, provides a glimpse into Ghai's illustrious career and personal journey, with contributions from notable figures such as filmmaker Imtiaz Ali and poet Gulzar, who attended the launch.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the event was the story behind the title of the book. Despite the obvious connection to his 1986 blockbuster Karma, Ghai clarified that the title had no such reference. "I even asked Suveen Sinha about this, why did you title the book Karma’s Child?" Ghai shared, adding that Sinha's response came after a deep interaction with him. “He said, after interacting with you, I have come to the conclusion that you’ve been doing Karam (good deeds) all your life, always thinking about doing better for people, which is why the god has been kind to you. Plus, I still think I am a child. Hence, the name Karma’s Child,” Ghai explained with a chuckle, emphasizing his childlike spirit, even after decades in the industry.

Ghai, who has directed iconic films like Taal, Khal Nayak, Ram Lakhan, Hero, and Pardes, also shared valuable advice for the new generation of filmmakers and talent. “I can only say, don’t be too ambitious, and progress organically in life, slowly but steadily. Focus on improving your work every day. Don’t get distracted by others, especially the noise of social media, which can be demoralizing. Don’t overthink; the key is to ask yourself whether today you’re better than yesterday. That’s the most crucial thing for today’s generation,” he said, imparting wisdom from his years of experience in the film industry.

Karma’s Child is not just a recount of Ghai’s professional achievements but also a reflection of his personal philosophies and values. His insights into life, work, and the ever-changing world of cinema make the memoir a must-read for aspiring filmmakers and anyone interested in the legacy of one of India’s most respected directors.
