On the first anniversary of Bad Newz, Dharma Productions took to social media to express heartfelt gratitude for the audience's overwhelming response to the film. The studio posted on X (formerly Twitter):

“Shukriya meherbaani karam for falling in love, laughing, and crying with the trio-uble makers! Celebrating #1YearOfBadNewz.”

Released on July 19, 2024, Bad Newz defied expectations with its quirky premise, emotional beats, and unexpected box-office performance. Starring Vicky Kaushal, Ammy Virk, and Triptii Dimri, the film grossed over 115.74 crore worldwide, cementing its place as a sleeper hit despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, who rated it between 2.5 and 3 stars out of 5.

At the heart of Bad Newz is a plot inspired by a rare and real medical condition—heteropaternal superfecundation—a phenomenon in which twins are fathered by two different men. This biological rarity, documented in less than 1% of dizygotic twin births according to a 1997 Journal of Forensic Sciences study, added a bizarre yet intriguing twist to the story, setting it apart in a genre often driven by formula.

The film’s tone—balancing offbeat humor with emotional resonance—fits snugly within Dharma Productions’ legacy of blending heart and entertainment. Known for shaping Bollywood’s romantic comedy narrative since Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Karan Johar’s production house has continued to evolve with changing audience preferences, moving from grand love stories to more experimental, grounded themes.

While Bad Newz may not have received universal critical acclaim, its box-office figures and cultural impact speak to its resonance with viewers, particularly younger audiences drawn to unconventional storytelling. The chemistry between the lead trio, combined with a script that dared to tread new territory, proved to be a winning formula.

As the film completes one year, its success also marks a moment of reinvention for Dharma—signaling that stories rooted in novelty, when paired with emotional honesty and strong performances, can still strike gold in today’s ever-competitive cinematic landscape.

With fans celebrating the film across social platforms and speculating on potential sequels or spin-offs, Bad Newz may have just turned a rare biological twist into Bollywood’s latest franchise opportunity.
