Amazon Prime Video has debuted the full official trailer for Cocaine Quarterback: Signal-Caller for the Cartel, a gripping three-part documentary series produced by Mark Wahlberg’s Unrealistic Ideas. The series premieres on September 25, 2025, and offers a cautionary tale about the true story of Owen Hanson, a former USC football walk-on turned drug kingpin.
The documentary chronicles Hanson’s rise from humble beginnings to unexpectedly joining the powerhouse USC football team, before veering into illegal sports bookmaking and cocaine smuggling with ties to the infamous Sinaloa cartel. After his graduation, while many of his teammates pursued lucrative NFL careers, Hanson was lured by the promise of fast money, escalating his criminal activities into dangerous cartel dealings.
The series explores his downfall following a failed money laundering scheme that lost millions of cartel funds, plunging Hanson into a web of debt, criminal mishaps, and a dramatic FBI investigation. Featuring firsthand accounts—including interviews with Hanson himself—archival footage, and stylized dramatizations, the docuseries paints a vivid picture of betrayal and tragedy in the world of organized crime.
Directed by Jody McVeigh-Schultz, who also executive produces alongside Mark Wahlberg and other key producers, Cocaine Quarterback adds a dramatic layer to true crime storytelling with its focus on the collision between sports, ambition, and the drug underworld. Hanson’s story is both a warning and a fascinating study of how high-profile athletes can fall from grace.
