The Big Ten on Thursday announced its much-anticipated media rights deal, the most lucrative TV contract in college sports history. The conference will reportedly be paid between $7 billion and $8 billion over the next seven years.

On top of continuing to broadcast on Fox, Fox Sports 1 and the Big Ten Network, the conference will now add CBS, NBC and NBCUniversal's Peacock to a record-shattering, seven-year deal that will run from 2023 through the 2029-30 athletic season. Michigan vs. Ohio State Rivalry Shirts

It will also see the Big Ten end its 40-year relationship with ESPN. The network has dominated the college football landscape in terms of media rights and opinions for much of the 21st century; that the conference would walk away from the network illustrates how massive its new deal is, as well as ESPN's loosening stranglehold on the sport.

The Big Ten's deal, naturally, Flagler Saints clothes will see significant payout increases for the conference's member institutions, which starting in 2024 will include USC and UCLA. With their inclusion, the Big Ten's media foothold will include the nation's top three TV markets in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.

“The Big Ten Conference media rights agreements are more than just dollars and deals," Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren said in a statement. "They are a mechanism to provide stability and maximum exposure for our student-athletes, member institutions and partners during these uncertain times in collegiate athletics.

“We are very grateful to our world-class media partners for recognizing the strength of the Big Ten Conference brand and providing the incredible resources we need for our student-athletes to compete at the very highest levels, and to achieve their academic and athletics goals.”

With that, The Sporting News looks at the new media deal, including its worth, TV coverage details and what it means moving forward in regard to college football expansion.

How much is Big Ten TV deal worth?

According to the Action Network, the media rights deal is worth between $7 billion and $8 billion over the course of its seven-year deal: over $1 billion in payouts on an annual basis. The deal also includes an escalation clause that could see th Air Force Falcons shirt e deal rise in value to $10 billion total, based on changing markets and inflation.

The Athletic reports that CBS and NBC, new partners with the Big Ten, are paying $350 million annually for their media rights package.

That said, the deal is backloaded, as CBS' current deal with the SEC runs through the 2023 college football season. Because of that, the network will have a limited number of games it can broadcast before ramping up coverage in 2024.

Per the Action Network, Big Ten schools will receive the same distribution in 2023-24 as it will this year, roughly $60 million per school. The payout will increase slightly in the second year of the deal before it jumps to roughly $100 million per school, annually, starting in 2025. That's based purely on the media deal and does not include revenue from making the College Football Playoff, bowl games or NCAA Tournam College Lacrosse Jerseys ent.

Big Ten TV coverage under new deal

It remains to be seen how Fox, CBS and NBC will determine which networks get which games, but The Athletic reports that the networks will choose weeks as opposed to individual games; Fox, the Big Ten's longest-standing active media partner, has first choice of the networks.

Said CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus of the process (via The Athletic):

"There’s a selection process where all three broadcast partners will get a selection of No. 1 picks (weekly). It’s k College Lacrosse Shirts ind of a complicated matrix, but we’re all going to get high-quality games, and adding USC and UCLA makes the selection process all that much easier to administer since you now have these two national programs that are going to be playing in the Big Ten."

Fox's inclusion in the deal is actually a renewal to continue broadcasting football and men's basketball games (with the possibility of adding more sports throughout the year). It will include 10 to 14 games in the noon time slot on "Big Noon Fox."

Per the Action Network, Fox and its sister network Fox Sports 1 will televise between 24 and 27 games in 2023, jumping to 30 and 32 games annually from 2024 through the 2029 season. They will also broadcast a combined 45 men's basketball games.


CBS in 2023 will broadcast seven regular-season football games, with every broadcast being simulcast to Paramount+, the network's dedicated streaming service.

In 2024, CBS will televise up to 15 regular-season football games in its historical 3:30 p.m. ET time slot, including an annual Black Fri NCAA Crewneck Sweatshirts day afternoon game. And, yes, CBS is bringing its iconic football coverage theme coverage to the Big Ten.

The deal also includes men's basketball coverage in both the regular season and postseason, as well as coverage of the Big Ten men's and women's basketball tournaments. Per the Action Network, CBS will have nine to 15 men's basketball games, the fewest number of broadcasts of the Big Ten's media partners (except NBC, which did not submit an offer).


NBC will broadcast 14 to 16 games nationally starting in 2023, introducing "Big Ten Saturday Night" in the primetime slot — a direct companion to the network's "Sunday Night Football" for NFL coverage. Each of the games the network broadcasts will also be Conference USA Gear Jerseys simulcast to Peacock, NBCUniversal's dedicated streaming service.


Peacock will command as many as eight exclusive regular-season football games each seas Notre Dame vs. USC Rivalry Gear on (meaning the games will not appear on NBC). The network will also receive as many as 47 regular-season men's basketball games, including 32 conference games and 15 in non-conference action. The deal also provides for 30 women's regular-season games (20 conference and 10 non-conference).

The Action Network reports the Big Ten Network will broadcast between 38 and 41 football games in 2023 and will have at least that many from 2024 through 2029. The BTN will also carry the vast majority of men's basketball games, with 126 per year.

Big Ten championship schedule

Each of the three major networks will broadcast at least one of the Big Ten's championship games from 2023 through 2029. Fox has the most, with four; CBS has two; and NBC has one.

That said, the Big Ten has not stopped potential expansion with just the two Los Angeles schools. Per the Action Network, the conference is still looking to add more current Pac-12 schools:

Regardless of whether Notre Dame joins the Big Ten or remains independent, the league still wants to add more Pac-12 schools to help reduce potential travel concerns for USC and UCLA, sources said.

The Athletic also reports that Warren "would never close the door on expansion, but it has to be at the right time for the right reasons with the right institutions."
