The Duke coach announced before the start of the 2021-22 season that this would be his final campaign coaching the Blue Devils after a Hall of Fame career at the helm of the perennial Blue Blood. He will retire as the all-time winningest coach in men's basketball and with more national championships (five) than all but UCLA great John Wooden.
But at Duke, beating rival UNC is just as important as anything else accomplished in the program. Coach K's record vs. UNC
Back on Feb. 5, when Duke visited the Dean Smith Center for the last time under Krzyzewski, the Blue Devils won 87-67 to claim the coach's 50th win in the rivalry. All-time, Krzyzewski sits with a 50-47 record. The only season in which Krzyzewski did not coach in the rivalry came in the 1994-95 campaign, when he was recovering from back surgery.

In Smith's career at UNC, he went 59-35 against the Blue Devils, including a 24-14 mark against Krzyzewski when their careers overlapped. Since Smith retired following the 1996-97 season, however, Krzyzewski has owned the rivalry. He has gone 36-22 in the time since, including 23-19 against longtime Tar Heels coach Roy Williams, who retired at the end of the 2020-21 campaign.

Along his road to a winning record against UNC, Krzyzewski has had some wins that have meant just a little bit more.
Krzyzewski's 500th and 600th career wins came against the Tar Heels. In March 2011, Duke beat UNC in the ACC Tournament to give him win No. 898 in his career, one shy of tying Bob Knight for the most wins by a college basketball coach. He set the record two games later with an NCAA Tournament win against Michigan.
Krzyzewski's first victory in the rivalry came on Feb. 28, 1981. And, of course, the Feb. 5, 2022, win for Krzyzewski was also a major milestone as he became only the second coach in the rivalry to reach 50 wins against his opponent.
On March 6, 2010, Duke recorded the most lopsided victory against UNC in the Krzyzewski era when it beat UNC 82-50. Jan. 18, 1986
Krzyzewski had steadily built up the men's basketball program at Duke to again become a title contender, but it had fallen short in the NCAA Tournament in both 1984 a College Lacrosse Shirts nd 1985. But in 1986, Duke reached its highest ceiling yet under Krzyzewski.
For UNC, Jan. 18, 1986, was the debut night for the Dean Smith Center, and it couldn't have been a more anticipated clash. UNC was ranked No. 1, while Duke came to Chapel Hill ranked No. 3. The two teams traded shots throughout the game, but it was the Tar Heels that defended their new home arena with a 95-92 finish.

The regular-season finale looked to be no different at Cameron Indoor. The No. 3 Tar Heels led by 17 points midway through the second half, but No. 1 Duke was far from out of it. Roshown McLeod scored a go-ahead basket to put Duke up 77-75 with 1:01 left to play. The Tar Heels had two chances to knot the game up, however, as Ed Cota went to the free throw line with 9.5 seconds left and Brendon Haywood went to the line with 1.2 seconds left. They went 0-for-4 as the last attempt by Cota and Haywood were each intentionally missed to set up offensive rebound chances.
The triumph gave Krzyzewski his 500th career coaching win.
Feb. 5, 2004
Roy Williams, the second-longest-tenured UNC coach Krzyzewski faced in his Duke career, was in the midst of his first season in Chapel Hill, and had yet to face the Blue Devils. The Tar Heels were No. 17 in the nation and came into the Feb. 5 showdown at 13-5, matched up against No. 1 Duke, which was 19-1.
Duke had the edge in the first half of the first Krzyzewski-Williams clash, 42-37, but North Carolina stormed back, with Jawad Williams scoring a late 3 to tie the game at 75 and send the game to overtime. It appeared UNC would capture some more magic as Rashad McCants tied the game with 13.5 seconds left on a 3-pointer, but Duke's Chris Duhon drove down the length of the court and made a reverse layup to put Duke up with 6.5 seconds. Duke went on to win 83-81.

Duke and UNC have been involved in plenty of top-10 matchups in their rivalry's history, but few will be remembered like the clash on Feb. 8, 2012.
No. 5 UNC took a narrow 43-40 halftime lead over No. 10 Duke and began to pull away late in the second half, moving up by 10 points with 2:38 remaining. But the Blue Devils scored a pair of 3-pointers to make it a two-score game. UNC center Tyler Zeller accidentally knocked a ball into the Duke basket, but he brought a point back with a free throw on the other end. On the ensuing possession, Austin Rivers took the ball up the court and drilled a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to stun the Chapel Hill crowd as Duke won 85-84.
Feb. 8, 2020
Eight years to the date of Rivers' thrilling game-winner, Duke won again in similar fashion. This time, however, the matchup was between heavy favorite No. 7 Duke and unranked UNC, which had a 10-12 record.
The Tar Heels played well above their record, however, jumping out to a 44-35 halftime advantage and threatening to pull a massive upset over its arch-rival at the Dean Smith Center. North Carolina led by 10 with 2:18 left, but Duke started to come back. The Blue Devils finished the second half on a 15-5 run, capped by a buzzer-beating jump shot from Tre Jones to send the game to overtime.
There was more heroics to be had. The two teams were tied at 96 with time running out in overtime when Jones attempted another jumper. The ball never reached the basket, but Wendell Moore grabbed the airball and put it back at the buzzer to give Duke the 98-96 win.
