Director Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri, renowned for his hard-hitting and thought-provoking films like The Kashmir Files, has officially commenced shooting for his next big project, The Delhi Files - The Bengal Chapter. The filmmaker, known for his unapologetic storytelling, chose to mark his birthday on Sunday with the start of this much-anticipated film. The project promises to continue Agnihotri’s mission of unveiling significant chapters of Indian history and is set to be another powerful cinematic experience.
Following the massive success of The Kashmir Files, Agnihotri has reunited with Abhishek Agarwal, the producer behind his earlier project, under the banner of Abhishek Agarwal Arts. The two are also collaborating with Agnihotri’s own production house, I Am Buddha, to bring The Delhi Files to the big screen. This project is expected to be another hard-hitting drama, shedding light on pivotal events that have shaped the nation’s history. The film is scheduled for release on August 15, 2025, adding to the growing anticipation surrounding the movie.
To mark the start of the shoot, Agnihotri’s production company shared a heartfelt birthday message on social media. The official handle of Abhishek Agarwal Arts posted: “Heartfelt birthday wishes to our gutsy director @vivekagnihotri. Your passion for truth and storytelling drives #TheDelhiFiles forward with purpose and power.” The message also teased the film’s release date and highlighted the film's powerful premise with the hashtag #RightToLife. With its bold subject matter and Agnihotri’s reputation for tackling sensitive topics, The Delhi Files is expected to stir conversations and leave a lasting impact.
Agnihotri also took to his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), to share a video of a puja ceremony marking the beginning of the film's production. In the video, Agnihotri expressed his gratitude and shared his vision for the project. He wrote, “Good start! Shooting of #TheDelhiFiles started today with your blessings. All the goddesses of the unit i.e. all the female members completed the pooja together. O mother! Give us the courage to tell this difficult story with complete honesty and fearlessness.” This emotional and symbolic gesture reflected Agnihotri’s dedication to the subject and his intent to approach it with the utmost sincerity and respect.
Vivek Agnihotri’s previous works, especially The Kashmir Files, have earned him widespread recognition, both for his bold narrative style and his willingness to tackle controversial subjects. The Kashmir Files became a nationwide sensation, with its depiction of the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in the 1990s. The film won the Nargis Dutt Award for Best Film on National Integration at the 69th National Film Awards, cementing Agnihotri’s reputation as a director unafraid to tell difficult truths. Before that, he also earned acclaim for his film The Tashkent Files (2019), which won the National Film Award for Best Screenplay - Dialogues.
With The Delhi Files - The Bengal Chapter, Agnihotri is once again poised to address significant chapters of India’s history, and the film’s bold premise and powerful subject matter are likely to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. As he embarks on this new journey, Agnihotri’s track record of tackling pressing socio-political issues makes The Delhi Files one of the most eagerly awaited films of 2025.
