The timeless charm of Umrao Jaan drew several esteemed names from the music and film fraternity to its special screening held in Mumbai last night. Celebrated playback singer Suresh Wadkar, accompanied by his wife Padma Wadkar, graced the occasion along with actors Aishwarya Sharma, Rajshri Deshpande, and veteran filmmaker Akbar Khan.
Dressed in elegant ethnic wear, the guests added a sense of old-world glamour befitting the event, paying tribute to one of Indian cinema’s most iconic period dramas.
Directed by Muzaffar Ali, Umrao Jaan (1981) is a cinematic adaptation of Mirza Hadi Ruswa's 1899 Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada. The film starred Rekha in a career-defining role as a courtesan and poet from Lucknow whose life unfolds in a delicate tapestry of love, betrayal, and artistry.
With music by Khayyam and lyrics by Shahryar, the film became a landmark in Indian film music history. Upon release, it garnered immense critical acclaim and went on to win four National Film Awards, including Best Actress for Rekha. It also earned three Filmfare nominations, winning Best Director and Best Music Director.
The screening served not only as a celebration of Umrao Jaan’s enduring legacy but also as a gathering of admirers whose lives and art continue to be touched by the film’s timeless beauty.
