Disney has announced that Academy Award-winning actor Robert Downey Jr. will serve as the official godparent of its newest and largest cruise ship, the Disney Adventure. The announcement comes ahead of the vessel’s maiden voyage next month from its home port in Singapore.
Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences and incoming CEO of The Walt Disney Company, said, “Our new ship continues Disney Cruise Line’s tradition of bringing great stories to life at sea, and we are honored that Robert Downey Jr., who has guided audiences through unforgettable Marvel stories, is the official godparent for the Disney Adventure.”
Downey’s legendary portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man, the cornerstone of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has left an indelible mark on pop culture. His decade-plus journey as the iconic character culminated in Avengers: Endgame, which grossed over $2.79 billion globally. Downey, named an official Disney Legend in 2019, is set to return to the MCU as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, releasing on December 18.
Speaking about the honor, Downey said, “It’s impossible to describe the majesty of the Adventure, and to be its godparent is an honor. As the largest ship in the Disney fleet, a gargantuan blessing must be bestowed ... I’ll do my darndest.”
The Disney Adventure promises an immersive experience with more than 100 years of Disney storytelling brought to life across seven themed areas. At the Marvel Landing on the top decks, guests can take the Tony Stark-inspired Ironcycle Test Run—the first roller coaster on a Disney Cruise ship and the longest at sea. The open-air Disney Imagination Garden will host the Avengers Assemble! live stage show, featuring high-octane stunts and special effects as Marvel Super Heroes and Villains clash. Young recruits can also visit the Marvel WEB Workshop inside Disney’s Oceaneer Club to try on Super Hero suit prototypes and test top-secret Avengers tech.
In addition to Marvel experiences, the Disney Adventure offers Disney’s signature hospitality: character meet-and-greets, Broadway-style shows, themed staterooms, concierge accommodations, and over 20 dining and lounge venues offering world-class international and Asian-inspired cuisines. The ship combines high-seas adventure with Disney magic, promising an unforgettable voyage for families and fans of all ages.
