Bollywood came together in grief and remembrance as family, friends, and film industry veterans gathered in Mumbai yesterday for the prayer meet of director Rono Mukherjee, who passed away recently. Known as the uncle of Kajol, Rani Mukherjee, and director Ayan Mukherjee, Rono Mukherjee’s passing marks the end of a lesser-known but cherished chapter in Hindi cinema.
Kajol, who shared a close bond with her uncle, was among the first to arrive at the prayer meet. Visibly emotional, she was seen embracing family members and offering support. Other prominent figures who paid their respects included veteran actress Jaya Bachchan and her daughter Shweta Bachchan, who arrived together and quietly joined the solemn gathering.
Salim Khan, legendary screenwriter and father of Salman Khan, also attended the ceremony. Though he appeared frail and required assistance while walking, his presence was a poignant tribute to the deep ties he shared with Rono Mukherjee over the decades. The event was a reminder of the filmmaker’s long-standing connection with Bollywood’s inner circle, despite having directed only two films in his career.
Rono Mukherjee’s directorial work includes Tu Hi Meri Zindagi (1965) and Haiwan (1977). He was also the father of actress Sharbani Mukherjee, known for her roles in Border and Mohandas. The prayer meet became a moment of reunion for the Mukherjee family and a testament to the quiet impact Rono Mukherjee had on those around him—both in the industry and in his family.
