Anu Singh Chaudhary, known for her exceptional work on shows like Scoop, Aarya, Eclipse, Grahan, The Good Girl Show, and Mrs, believes that landscape for screenwriters and writers will only change with strong community and active participation.
In her recent media interaction, Anu Singh Chaudhary addressed the issue of writers often being unrecognised, and how that can change, she said, "To get recognized, all the writers need to come together. Unity among writers and creators is paramount. We must celebrate each other’s work, whether anyone else does or not. It comes from the community. And we do have a strong body, Screenwriters’ Association of India (SWA), which is not just a platform; it’s the force that can drive real change for writers.”
She is a strong believer that SWA provides the necessary space for writers to voice their grievances. "If a writer is being denied their rights or ill-treated, the community must address the issue without fear or hesitation. The association is crucial for ensuring that writers’ voices are heard and their rights are protected in an often unsteady industry.”
However, Anu acknowledges the difficulties in rallying screenwriters together. "It’s easier said than done," she admits. "We all have our fears, and our insecurities, and they are justified in their own way. The market is in a slump, work is scarce, and we live in an unsustainable ecosystem, as we live from project to project, but SWA has managed to get minimum pay clause going for everyone”.
Despite the uncertainty and challenges, she urges writers to be proactive, to share knowledge, and to work collectively to improve the industry for all: writers must embrace the strength of their community through SWA. "There’s so much we can do to improve work standards if we just communicate openly, writers must communicate, share their experience and also address the red-flags and green-flags about makers with each other" she says.
