Critically acclaimed actor and filmmaker Konkona Sen Sharma has never been one to follow the crowd when it comes to storytelling choices, and her recent candid remarks prove just that. Known for her deeply nuanced performances in independent and parallel cinema, the actor recently shared her thoughts on a genre she finds difficult to connect with—fantasy epics. Speaking at the India’s Handloom Heritage & The Spirit Of Heirlooms For The Future event in Mumbai, Konkona offered a refreshingly honest perspective on her viewing preferences.

“I am okay with any genre,” she said, before clarifying her stance. “But what I am not naturally drawn towards [is] one of those fantasy, mythic, battle, of epic proportions. I mean everything is hyper-realism, everything is specific, the hero is very specific, very specific villains, and they are flying through the air. I am obviously not able to relate to that.” Her words reflect a clear inclination toward grounded narratives, something that has defined her artistic journey over the years.

However, Konkona was quick to add that her aversion isn’t absolute. She acknowledged that strong storytelling can transcend genre boundaries. “Sometimes when it’s well-made, I don’t mind,” she noted, citing an example: “For example Sinners was a film, which was not necessarily realistic at all, but it had some deep truths, brought out through allegory, metaphor, fantasy, vampire, gore—you know, it was a musical, it was pretty epic, but had a strong commentary, and very well thought out.” Her statement highlights that while spectacle alone doesn’t appeal to her, meaningful subtext and layered storytelling can still draw her in.

Born to legendary filmmaker and actor Aparna Sen and journalist Mukul Sharma, Konkona has carved her own space in the industry with a career defined by substance over spectacle. Beyond cinema, she is also a vocal advocate for Indian handlooms and sustainable fashion. She frequently lends her presence to events celebrating traditional craftsmanship, including the Chetak Screen Awards 2026, where she champions the cause of preserving textile heritage.

On the professional front, Konkona was last seen in the Netflix series Accused, where she portrayed Dr. Geetika—a complex character grappling with allegations of sexual misconduct. The role once again reinforced her reputation for taking on layered, challenging parts that push narrative boundaries. Her performance was noted for its restraint and emotional depth, hallmarks of her acting style.

Looking ahead, Konkona is set to explore a new creative avenue. She is gearing up for Welcome to Khoya Mahal, her web series directorial debut for Amazon Prime Video. The series stars Aditi Rao Hydari and Barun Sobti, and is already generating curiosity among audiences eager to see how her distinctive storytelling sensibilities translate behind the camera. If her past work is any indication, viewers can expect a narrative rich in emotional authenticity rather than grand spectacle.
