Having made her acting debut at the age of seventeen, Karisma Kapoor is a Bollywood actress, who was one of the topmost actresses of the 90s. Hailing from the most celebrated family of Bollywood, the Kapoor family, Karisma is the granddaughter of the legendary actor Raj Kapoor, and hence it comes as no surprise that the actress has several critically acclaimed and commercially successful films to her credit.

The actress made her Bollywood debut with Prem Qaidi in 1991. She subsequently featured in films like Anari (1993). Coolie No. 1 (1995), Raja Hindustani (1996), Dil Toh Pagal Hai (1997), HUm Saath Saath hai (1999), Fiza (2000), and Zubeidaa (2001). The winner of a National Award for Best Supporting Actress and four Filmfare Awards, the actress was listed as a style icon by the Vogue. Apart from acting on the big screen, the talented actress has also appeared on television, where she played the leading role in the series Karishma: The Miracles of Destiny in 2013.

Early Life
Granddaughter of veteran actor Raj Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor was born to the popular yesteryear actors Randhir Kapoor and Babita on 25th June 1974 in Mumbai. Her mother has a British Christian descent and her father is a Hindu-Sindhi. The actress has a younger sister, Kareena Kapoor Khan who is also an actress and is married to the Chote Nawab of Pataudi, Saif Ali Khan. Karisma completed her schooling from Cathedral and John Connon School after which she attended Sophia College. However, she soon dropped out of college to pursue her acting career.

Personal Life
Karisma was dating her Jigar co-star Ajay Devgn in 1992. However, the two split after three years of dating in 1995. However, Ajay soon fell in love with Kajol, leading to Karisma and his split. In 1997, Karisma met Abhishekh Bachchan at her brother Nikhil Nanda`s wedding to Abhishekh`s sister Shweta. The two soon started dating and got engaged after five years of courtship in 2005. However, they called off their engagement within months and the actress tied the knot with Delhi-based industrialist Sanjay Kapur the following year. CEO of Six India, Sanjay is a divorcee and is the father of two. The two have two children together, a daughter named Samaira and a son named Kiaan. After being married for 11 years, the couple filed for divorce through mutual consent in 2014, battling for two years, the couple was finally granted divorce in 2016.

Movie Career
For an actress who went to become one of the most successful actors, Karisma Kapoor had a rather subdued start to her career. Her debut movie in 1991 Prem Qaidi was the remake of the Telugu movie Prema Khaidi, which got a lukewarm reception at the box-office and was a commercial failure. The actress then appeared in several other movies like Police Officer (1992) and Jaagruti (1992) but success eluded her. It was not until October 1992 when her film Jigar that the actress got her first box-office hit. The movie also garnered positive critical reviews, marking her first of the many collaborations with Ajay Devgn in the later years.

In 1993, the actress appeared in Anari, which became one of the top-grossing films of the year. She next appeared in the T. Rama Rao-directed Muqabla, which was the remake of the Telugu movie Police Brothers.

Most of her other releases in 1993, including Sangram, Shaktiman, and Dhanwaan, were either average hits or flops. The actress more than made up for her series of flops with her 1994 movie Raja Babu alongside Govinda. The movie got poor critical reception but it emerged to be a commercial hit, grossing more than 45 cores INR. Later, the same year, she did Andaz and Khuddar, both the movies were moderately successful at the box-office. In the same year, the actress appeared in Rajkumar Santoshi`s multi-starrer comedy movie Andaz Apna Apna. The following year in 1995, Karisma once again collaborated with Govinda, the pairing which was much liked by the audience, in Coolie No. 1.

In 1996, the actress had 10 releases to her name and five of them viz. Bal Brahmachari, Rakshak, Papi Guida, and Megha were flops at the box-office. One of her other five releases, Saajan Chale Sasural proved to be a box-office hit. Her other hit movie in the year was Jeet. The film ended up becoming the second highest-grossing film of the year; the film`s box-office collections totaled to more than 400 cores INR. Later in the year, the actress appeared in one of the most successful films of career Raja Hindustani. The movie directed by Dharmesh Darshan was the highest-grossing movie of the year. For her stellar performance in the movie, the actress won her maiden Filmfare Award for Best Actress.

She collaborated with the tried and tested combination of David Dhawan and Govinda for Hero No. 1. The movie emerged to be a commercial and critical hit. In her fifth release of the year, the actress appeared in Yash Chopra`s musical romantic drama Dil To Pagal Hai alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit Nene. The movie emerged as a blockbuster at the box-office and for her brilliant performance, Karisma Kapoor won her first National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Karisma Kapoor had a remarkable year in 1999. It was in this year the actress collaborated for the first time with the Rajshri Productions with Hum Saath-Saath Hain. The movie, was a blockbuster; the family drama grossed more than 100 cores INR at the box-office. The actress` other releases of the year, Biwi No. 1 and Haseena Maan Jayegi, too were commercially successful movies.

Karisma Kapoor`s first release in the new millennium was David Dhawan`s rom-com Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge. The movie, co-starring Salman Khan, became one of the biggest hits of the year. In the same year, the actress featured in the critically acclaimed movie Fiza directed by Khalid Mohamed. The film was an average hit but Karisma Kapoor received unanimous praise from the critics for her brilliant performance in the movie. The following year, she received more critical acclaim for her portrayal of the titular role in Shyam Benegal`s Zubeidaa. The movie co-starring Manoj Bajpayee and Rekha grossed about 20 crores INR at the box-office and Karisma went on to win the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress. In the same year, the actress starred in Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love alongside Akshay Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, and Juhi Chawla. In 2002, Karisma Kapoor had three releases, first of which was the romantic-drama, Haan...Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya, which was the remake of the 1981 Tamil film Mouna Geethangal. Her next release was the woman-centric drama Shakti: The Power directed by Krishna Vamsi. The film received critical acclaim and Karisma, for her brilliant performance, was lauded by the critics. Her last release of the year was Indra Kumar`s Rishtey where she played the role of a wealthy woman who falls in love with a poor man. The movie, also featuring Anil Kapoor and Shilpa Shetty in the lead roles, was a commercial and critical failure.

After Karisma`s only release in 2003, Baaz: A Bird in Danger failed at the box-office, the actress took a sabbatical from acting on the big screen. The actress returned to acting in 2012 with Vikram Bhatt`s Dangerous Ishhq alongside Rajneesh Duggal, which was a major commercial and critical failure. She was last seen in a special appearance in Zero (2018).
