Awards : Ajay Singh Deol better known as Sunny Deol, is an Indian film actor, director and producer known for his work in Hindi cinema. In a film career spanning over thirty five years and over hundred films, Sunny Deol has won two National Film Awards and two Filmfare Awards.

Sunny Deol made his debut opposite fellow debutante Amrita Singh in Betaab (1983). He received a Filmfare Award for Best Actor nomination for his performance. Subsequently, he went on to star in numerous successful films in the 1980s and 1990s. He made his debut as a director and producer with Dillagi, in which he starred alongside his brother Bobby. His critically recognized work includes Manzil Manzil (1984), Arjun (1985), Saveray Wali Gaadi & Sultanat (1986), Dacait (1987), Yateem & Paap Ki Duniya (1988),Tridev & ChaalBaaz (1989), Narsimha (1991),Vishwatma (1992),Veerta & Darr (1993), Imtihaan (1994), Jeet & Ghatak (1996), Ziddi & Border (1997), Salaakhen (1998), Arjun Pandit (1999) and Farz & Indian (2001).

With his portrayal of an amateur boxer wrongly accused of his brother's murder in Rajkumar Santoshi's critically and commercially successful Ghayal in 1990, Sunny Deol gained wide recognition and praise. The film went on to win seven Filmfare Awards and his performance won him the National Film Award – Special Jury Award / Special Mention (Feature Film) and the Filmfare Award for Best Actor. His portrayal of a lawyer in the film Damini – Lightning (1993) fetched him several accolades including the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor and the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. Anil Sharma's Gadar%3A Ek Prem Katha (2001), in which Sunny Deol portrayed a lorry driver who falls in love with a Muslim girl, was the highest-grossing Bollywood film ever at the time of its release, and garnered him another Filmfare Award for Best Actor nomination. Sunny Deol's successful films include The Hero%3A Love Story of a Spy (2003), Apne (2007), Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011) and Ghayal Once Again (2016). These accomplishments have established him as a leading actor of the Hindi film industry.

Born to Dharmendra and Prakash Kaur, Sunny Deol is one of the most popular actors in Bollywood. Although he studied theatre from Birmingham, most of his performances have portrayed him as the desi Jatt fighting with the bad guys. With that physique however, most people wouldn`t want to mess with him in real life at all. Sunny has always been keen on fitness and has lived up to his `Dhai kilo ka haath` dialogue that became very popular. Contrary to his reel life characters this on screen action hero is actually quiet and likes to keep to himself in real life.

Early Life
Born in Punjab, this star kid is the son of the yesteryear superstar actor Dharmendra. Sunny has 3 sibling including Bobby Deol, and two sisters Vijayta and Ajeeta who live in California. The actor completed his schooling from Sacred Heart Boys High School in Mumbai and later pursued went to Ramniranjan Anandilal Podar College of Commerce and Economics. After completing his college, he went on to study theatre.

Sunny is married to Pooja Deol who has successfully managed to stay away from the paparazzi. He is very private about his life off-screen

Early Career
Born in the film family sunny was known in the industry before he made his debut. The first time audiences met Sunny was in the year 1983 when he debuted with the movie Betaab. It was his first role and he managed to impress everyone instantly. Sunny received a lot of praise for his role and was also nominated for the Filmfare Best actor award. After his first big screen appearance he quickly became popular and went on to star in a lot of movies through the 80s and 90s. In the year 1985, Sunny was a part of Rahul Rawail`s Arjun opposite Dimple Kapadia. The movie was a hit at the box office and after the response it received the movie was also remade in Tamil.

In the year 1989 Sunny played the role of inspector Karan Saxena who is engaged to Divya, played by Madhuri Dixit in Rajiv Rai`s Tridev. In 1990 Sunny starred in the movie titled Krodh, along with Amrita Singh and Sonam. Ghayal was released the same year; his character Ajay Mehra won him his first national award. The movie was a super hit and the second highest grossing movie that year. Sunny played the character really well and it was another one of his movies to be remade in Tamil later.

In 1992, Sunny starred in the thriller Vishwatma. It was the story of two men seeking revenge. The story unfolds as Prabhat Singh (Sunny Deol) along with (Akash Bharadwaj) Chunky Pandey travels to Kenya to look for the underworld leader played by Amrish Puri. The suspense put together with their acting skills was all that they needed to have the audiences glued to their chairs. This one was a box office success too.

In the year 1993 Sunny starred in Lootere opposite Juhi Chawla. He played the role of a cop who is required to protect Anjali (Juhi) since she is the only witness. He takes her away to keep her safe and they fall in love during this journey. It was one of the few movies where sunny was seen romancing. He worked on another film along with Juhi Chawla the same year. The movie was titled Darr, starring Shah Rukh Khan who obsessively loves Kiran (Juhi Chawla). Sunny Deol is plays Kiran`s boyfriends role in the movie. It gave Shah Rukh his famous K.. K .. Kiran stutter while Sunny lost faith in the Chopra`s and decided against acting in any of their movies. He felt like his character wasn`t given enough screen space in the movie while the Chopra`s were busy endorsing Shah Rukh Khan.

The year wasn`t all unlucky for Sunny. Damini- Lightening was also released in the year 1993. He played the role of a Lawyer working on a rape case. The famous `Tarikh pe tarikh` dialogue and Sunny`s strong role got him a National award for his supporting role in the movie. Although he was not playing a lead role, his acting was recognized and appreciated. The dialogue became very popular too.

In JEET (1996), this crime fighting action hero was seen in a negative role of a criminal who falls in love with Kajal (Karisma Kapoor). While he is all set to give up his lifestyle and walk on the path of righteousness, Kajal decides to break up. When Kajal leaves Karan (Sunny Deol) he is heartbroken and is pulled back to his past.

With Border this Jatt was back to doing action film, the genre that has come to be known as the genre of his specialty. Border (1997) was a drama film based on the War between India and Pakistan in 1971. Sunny Deol played his aggressive character very well, it was one of the few popular war movies and it did very well at the box office too.

Sunny Deol also starred in Ziddi opposite Raveena Tandon in the year 1997. His character Deva was an aggressive young man who is concerned about the wellbeing of his family. Deva ends up in jail due to his aggressive behaviour. After his release from jail he starts a system he termed "Deva ki adaalat" which involves punishing people for their unjust doings. Raveena Tondon plays the role of Jaya, a club dancer who falls in love with him. Ziddi became a box office success and his fans in the north loved his performance.

Another one of his movies with his Lootere co-star Juhi Chawla was in the year 1999 called Arjun Pandit. He played the role of an aggressive lover who kidnaps Nisha (Juhi Chawla) to celebrate her birthday. Although the film wasn`t a box office success, Sunny played a character that reminded Bollywood of his versatile acting skills.

He also made his directorial debut the same year with Dillagi starring Bobby Deol and Urmila Matondkar. Sunny played the role of Rajvir`s (Bobby Deol`s) brother in the movie. Although the movie didn`t do too well at the box office, Sunny`s attempt at direction was appreciated.

In the year 2001, Sunny Deol was seen in Indian opposite Shilpa Shetty. His character Raj Shekhar Azad was an honest Deputy Commissioner on a mission to wipe out corruption in the system. He is faced by this equally stubborn terrorist. The same year he also starred in Farz opposite Preity Zinta. Sunny plays the role of the bad cop while his partner Arjun Singh is the good cop who sticks to the rules. Preity Zinta played the role of Arjun`s daughter who falls in love with Karan (Sunny Deol).

All his movies were a perfect blend of action and romance, and no matter if he was the good guy or the bad one, the audience fell in love with him. Just like in the movie Gadar- Ek Prem Katha (2001) where he played the role of a Truck driver named Tara Singh who falls in love with a Muslim girl, played by Ameesha Patel. The movie became popular for the dramatic love story and was commercially successful. It was one of the most successful films in India that year and Sunny Deol was also nominated for the Filmfare Award.

In his 2002 release Maa Tujhe Salam, Sunny played the role of a military officer. Playing a cop, or a military officer is like a walk in the park for Sunny and he does it flawlessly every time. In the year 2003, he played the lead role in the movie The Hero: Lovestory of a Spy. Sunny Deol a military officer Arun Sharma falls in love with Reshma (Preity Zinta) who agrees to act as a spy for the army and go across the border. Reshma is caught and she escapes and crosses the border. While the two are getting married there is an attack and Reshma goes missing. Arun changes his identity to become Wahid, a nuclear scientist, in order to seek revenge.

After his absence on the big screen for some time, Sunny Deol was seen alongside the Deol Family (Dharmendra and Bobby) in Apne (2007) and again in Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011). In 2013 Sunny Deol`s movie Singh Saab The Great was a hit. It was built around the idea that bringing about a change was better than seeking revenge. He later did Dishkiyaoon in 2014. He directed Ghayal Once Again in 2016 which was a sequel to the 1990 movie Ghayal. He then featured in Poster Boys (2017), Yamla Pagla Deewana: Phir Se (2018) and Blank (2019). Although there has been a decrease in his big screen appearances, Sunny Deol is still the most popular action hero in Bollywood. In 2019, he directed his third film Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas, marking the debut of his son Karan Deol. He then featured in Blank (2019) and Chup: Revenge of The Artist (2022). He reprised his role as Tara Singh for the commercially hit film Gadar 2 (2023).
