Deva – A Disastrous Attempt at Recreating Mumbai Police, But Misses the Mark in Every Possible Way

Release Date : 31 Jan 2025

It’s a cinematic nightmare wrapped in a police uniform. Sure, Shahid Kapoor is undeniably hot in it, but unless you’re a die-hard fan who’s willing to watch him walk in slow motion for 2 hours (and let’s be honest, even you won’t enjoy this), save yourself the pain and just don’t. This isn’t just a bad movie—it’s a masterclass in how to ruin a perfectly good concept with zero originality, creativity, or sense.

So, apparently, some genius thought it would be a brilliant idea to take the much-loved Mumbai Police and remake it in the laziest possible way, slap Shahid Kapoor in the lead, and call it Deva. Newsflash: remaking a movie doesn’t mean just throwing a few plot elements and copying a couple of scenes. You need heart—and this one’s as empty as a hollow bullet casing.

Let’s break it down. Director Rosshan Andrrews, who helmed the original Mumbai Police in 2013, clearly ran out of ideas and decided to just shove his previous film down our throats, this time in a sleeker, shinier, and utterly soulless package. The result? A bloated mess that stretches its nearly two-and-a-half-hour runtime with all the grace of a drunken elephant trying to walk a tightrope. It’s like watching a car crash in slow motion—you know it’s going to be bad, but the sheer stupidity of it makes it excruciating.

Now, let’s talk about Shahid Kapoor—he is the one and only shining light in this dumpster fire. Shahid channels his inner badass with a look that screams "I’m here to break things and not care about the consequences." The clean-shaven head, the cocky attitude, the slow-mo walk—he’s essentially Dirty Harry meets Zanjeer, but with more swag and less logic. Seriously, if there’s one reason to sit through this torture, it’s to watch Shahid ooze charm in a role that demands nothing more than violence and testosterone—and guess what? He delivers. But here's the catch: even Shahid can’t save this trainwreck.

The rest of the cast? They’re... painful. Pooja Hegde—who’s clearly being wasted in a role that could’ve been done by a random extra—returns after what feels like an eternity, and honestly, it’s as if she forgot how to act. Girish Kulkarni as the politician? A cardboard cutout. Kubbra Sait plays the female colleague who somehow gets overshadowed by a wall. No, really. A wall. And the rest of the ensemble cast is like a bunch of amateurs trying to mimic the most basic crime drama clichés. It's as if they took one look at a list of "things every cop drama needs" and checked off all the boxes without understanding why.

The dialogue delivery is stilted and lacks any punch, which is hilarious because the movie clearly thinks it’s intense. Spoiler alert: It’s not. There’s a lot of shouting, posturing, and flexing, but no real substance. I mean, the whole movie feels like it was written by someone who binge-watched every cop thriller ever made, but somehow missed the essence of what makes them gripping.

And don’t even get me started on the plot. Deva’s narrative is like an awkwardly designed jigsaw puzzle, where none of the pieces fit, and the picture they form is just... disappointing. A bunch of predictable twists, illogical sequences, and an ending that wraps up with the finesse of a toddler trying to tie their shoes. It's like a film that doesn’t try to be good—because it knows it won’t be.

In summary? Avoid Deva at all costs.
