Ohio State returns the nation's top offense under fourth-year coach Ryan Day. The Buckeyes feature three of Carroll University Pioneers shirt the top 12 players in the Heisman odds with quarterback C.J. Stroud, running back TreVeyon Henderson and receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Ohio State also has a new defensive coordinator in Jim Knowles, who was brought over from Oklahoma State in the offseason. There is a national-championship-or-bust feel in Columbus this season.
Notre Dame opened a new chapter at the end of 2021 when Marcus Freeman replaced Brian Kelly as head coach. Freeman coached in the Fiesta Bowl WVU vs. Pitt Rivalry shirt against Oklahoma State, and the former Ohio State linebacker returns for his first regular-season game. The Irish have talent too with SN Preseason All-Americans Michael Mayer, Jarrett Patterson and Isaiah Foskey. Tyler Buchner will make his first start at quarterback. The Irish are heavy underdogs.
Ohio State leads the all-time series 4-2, and they have won the last four meetings. Here's everything to know about betting on the Week 1 opener between the Fighting Irish and Buckeyes:

Three Emporia Notre Dame vs. USC Rivalry Gear State Hornets clothes trends to know
— The Irish were 1-7 against top-five teams and 3-10 against top-10 teams under Brian Kelly. Six of those losses to top-10 teams were by 14 points or more. Notre Dame lost to No. 9 Oklahoma State 37-35 in Freeman's first game.
— The Buckeyes are 18-1 S/U as home favorites under Day, and they are 12-7 ATS in those games. The lone S/U loss was 35-28 to No. 12 Oregon on Sept. 11, 2021.
— Ohio State and Notre Dame have met four times in the AP Poll era. The Buckeyes won both games in a home-and-home series in 1995-96, and they won the 2006 Fiesta Bowl and 2016 Fiesta Bowl. The average margin of victory in those games was 16 points.

Three things to watch
— Will ND's second NCAA Crewneck Sweatshirt ary hold up? Stroud is working with the deepest group of receivers in the country. Smith-Njigba and Marvin Harrison Jr. are mismatches on the perimeter, and Emeka Egbuka and Julian Fleming have big-play potential. Notre Dame allowed 224.2 passing yards per game last season, and that test isn't just the secondary, which added Northwestern transfer Brandon Joseph. How do linebackers – an experienced group that includes Bo Bauer, JD Bertrand and Jack Kiser – hold up against the pass in the middle of the field? New defensive coordinator Al Golden must figure that out. The Irish have five seniors on their front seven, and that includes Foskey, the best pass rusher of the bunch.

— Tyler Buchner's debut. Look at the last two bowl matchups between the schools. Notre Dame quarterbacks Brady Quinn (29 of 45, 286 yards) and DeShone Kizer (22 of 37, 284 yards, 2 TDs, INT) were high-volume passers against the Buckeyes, but they did that without enough run support. Notre Dame averaged 91.5 yards on 3.0 yards per carry. Notre Dame needs to establish a running game that is much more effectiv BridgeValley Community & Technical College clothes e than that in order to support Buchner, who cannot be stuck in third-and-longs against what should be an improved Ohio State pass rush around Zach Harrison, J.T. Tuimoloau and Jack Sawyer. It's on Notre UNC vs. Duke Rivalry Gear Dame offensive coordinator Tommy Rees to stick with the run with Chris Tyree and Audric Estime as long as possible, even if Patterson (foot) is unable to go. That did not happen in the Fiesta Bowl loss to Oklahoma State.
— The Buckeyes' new-look defense. Knowles was brought on to fix a defense that could not stop the run in losses against Oregon and Michigan last season. It's a 4-2-5 base, and Oklahoma State transfer Tanner McAllister was brought in to settle the secondary. We mentioned the Buckeyes' pass-rushers, but the linebacker play from Steele Chambers and Tommy Eichenberg will come into focus. Notre Dame lost leading receiver Avery Davis (ACL), but tight end Michael Mayer and sophomore receiver Lorenzo Styles will give Buchner a pair of reliable targets.
Stat that matters
Night games at The Shoe ar Georgetown College Tigers shirt e special events. The Buckeyes played their first night game at home in 1985, and they are 20-5 in home night games all time. Four of those five losses, however, are against non-conference teams. No. 2 Texas (2005), No. 3 USC (2009), Virginia Tech (2014) and No. 3 Oklahoma (2017) have all managed to weather that atmosphere. Notice three of those teams were ranked in the top five. If the Irish are worthy of that label, then this is how you prove it.
Ohio State vs. Notre Dame prediction
This would be a fun series if they played it more often. The Buckeyes' offense i Notre Dame vs. USC Rivalry Jerseys s going to be tough to stop, and Stroud will be aggressive off the go with that deep group of receivers. Both teams come out passing before settling in with the run, and Ohio State will have a double-digit lead at halftime. The Buckeyes will keep that double-digit throughout and force a key turnover early in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Notre Dame scores a back-door TD late, but it's not enough in the first huge piece of the CFP puzzle. That belongs to the Buckeyes.
Final score: Ohio State 42, Notre Dame 27
