Why did Jaden Ivey Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils clothes choose Purdue over mom Niele's alma mater Notre Dame?
Purdue's Jaden Ivey is a bona fide star. The guard is averaging 20 points per game for the Boilermakers in the NCAA tournament, and as a sophomore he's seen a big jump Alabama vs. Auburn Rivalry Gear in production from his freshman year.
Ivey has deep roots in Indiana. His mother, Niele, is the coach at Notre Dame after playing five years for the Irish. She also spent four seasons in the WNBA with the Indiana Fever. Jaden is ex American University Eagles clothes tremely close to his mother, which raises the question: Why didn't he play at Notre Dame?
The answer, as former NBA commissioner David Stern would say, is "basketball reasons."
"I just loved the coaching staff," Ivey said in 2019, per Purdue Rivals site "Gold and Black." "I think it's honestly the best coaching staff in the country, College Cold Weather Jerseys and they saw something in me. I just love Coach Painter and what they did for me."
"[Rejecting Notre Dame] was hard, because it's family and almost every day that I go to the gym," Ivey said at the Alabama Crimson Tide clothes time. "But I've been here my whole life, lived here my whole life and I haven't been anywhere else. I think they're OK with me leaving. I know I am, and I'm just happy with the decision I made. I think Purdue is the best place for me and the best fit for me and as a person, I think I can grow at Purdue."
So far, Ivey has been correct. Last season was the first March Madness since 2016 in which Purdue didn't make the Sweet 16, and this year the Boilermakers find themselves back as 3-seed. Ivey had been a major part of the jump, WVU vs. Pitt Rivalry Jerseys averaging over 17 points a game and three assists, not to mentioned just under a steal per game.
Ivey has consistently had extremely high praise for Painter.
“The run they had, they had a great year Abilene Christian University Wildcats Jerseys ,” Ivey said in 2019 of the 2019 Boilermakers who lost in the Elite Eight, per the South Bend Tribune. “It was mostly because of (head) coach (Matt) Painter. He’s a great coach. When you have FSU vs. Miami Rivalry Jerseys a great coach like that, you can go anywhere. They were five seconds away from going to the Final Four. When I go there, we can make a run to the Final Four and maybe win it.”
Given that Ivey has grown up around Niele, it makes sense he would place such an emphasis on great coaching.
She took over for legendary Notre Dame coach Muffett McGraw in 2020. McGraw won two national championships with Notre Dame, posting an absurd 848–248 record as head coach. (Niele) Ivey is looking to build on that legacy. After a down year in 2020, the Irish are in the Sweet 16 as a No. 5 seed. They'll be playing No. 1 NC State on Saturday.
For Ivey, their concurrent runs are grounding her to her own success.
“It’s so special," Ivey said postgame on Monday after Notre Dame made the Sweet 16, per Sports Illustrated. "But I was so excited last night. First of all, my stress is as a mom. Today I was relaxed. Last night I was stressed. I was just so happy that he’s living out his dreams, I’m living out my dreams, and to watch him help his team get to the Sweet 16 was just so special for me. It was hard not being there, but he knows that I have a job to do, as well. I Bethel Wildcats Jerseys had a Face Bloomsburg Huskies Jerseys Time with him earlier just before the game, so we’re there for each other in spirit. But yeah, it’s just a special bond. It’s a special, unique situation. We’re Kentucky vs. Louisville Rivalry Gear both living out our dreams. I’m super blessed. I feel blessed to be in this position, and I just feel that God has his favor on both Jaden and I.”
That would appear to be the case. To have a mother-son run into the Sweet 16 in the same sport is something special. Purdue takes on Cinderella Saint Peter's on Friday as it tries to get into the Elite Eight, so it looks like Niele is once again going to have to displace her stress for Saturday's matchup with NC State.
