Who is Doug Edert? Saint Pete Canisius College Golden Griffins Jerseysr's guard (and his mustache) making most of Peacocks' March Madness run
The face of this year's NCAA Tournament isn't one of a top NBA prospect or legendary coach (sorry, Mike Krzyzewski). It is the face of a 6-2, 185-pound guard from Saint Peter's — and yes, it has a mustache.
Doug Edert quickly became a March Madness folk hero as the Peacocks made their way to the Elite Eight. He combined to score 43 points in 69 minutes off the bench in Saint Peter's victories over Kentucky, Murray State and Purdue, shooting 52.6 percent from the field.

How did this unlikely NCAA Tournament hero land at Saint Peter's? And what's going on with that facial hair?
Who is Doug Edert?
Before he starred at Saint Peter's, Edert played four years of varsity basketball at Bergen Catholic High School in New Jersey. He scored more than 1,000 career points, and he won a county and state championship as a senior.
Edert was hardly swimming in Division I offers at the time, but Peacocks coach Shaheen Holloway got a tip about him. He was impressed with Edert's play.
"He can shoot the ball," Holloway told The Athletic. "And he's tough. He's probably the toughest guy on my team, because he don't care. He plays with reckless abandon. I went to go see him play and yeah, he made a couple shots, but what I really liked was he was guarding the best player, didn't back down, grabbed rebounds, played with emotion.
"I love guys who play with emotion and passion. That's who we are. Those are the type of guys I like to recruit, guys who have something to prove. You have to be tough to play for me."
Edert emerged as one of the best sharpshooters in the MAAC as a fres College Operation Hat Trick Apparel hman, hitting 44.2 percent of his 3-point attempts and earning a spot on the MAAC All-Rookie team. He has shot nearly 40 percent from beyond the arc through three seasons, and he has never lost that trademark toughness Holloway noticed when he first watched him.
"I definitely have a chip on my shoulder," Edert told The Athletic. "I've always had to prove myself, really from my lack of athleticism. But everybody on my team is that way. All of us individually have a chip on our shoulder and as a team we have a chip on our shoulder. It's a whole-program thing, where we just want to prove ourselves."
Why does Doug Edert have a mustache?
OK, we have to talk about the 'stache.
During Saint Peter's Carroll University Pioneers shirt second-round win over Murray State, CBS Sports' Jamie Erdahl reported that Edert began rocking the mustache in January. After scoring a season-high 21 points against Iona, the UNC vs. Duke Rivalry Jerseys mustache had to stay on his face.
Despite the fact that Doug's father, Bill, has heard some refer to his son as a "1970s porn star" or " WVU vs. Pitt Rivalry shirt Ted Lasso," Doug doesn't plan to shave any time soon.
"Most people have a little bit of fear about what people think of them," Bill told Appalachian State Mountaineers Jerseys the New York Post. "He's out there with that crazy hair and that mustache right now just doing his thing. That's who he is. He almost reminds me of Will Ferrell."
In fact, Edert seems to be leaning into the mustache jokes, saying that it may have given him special powers.
"I never thought this was going to happen, but it's just hilarious," Edert told The Athletic. "There's a lot of memes, a lot of pictures online. I'm rocking with it. I love it. It's a part of me now."
