A freshman originally from Angola who played high school basketball in Florida at Montverde Academy, Chattanooga center Silvio DeSousa helped Kansas reach the Final Four back in 2018. Not much in his basketball career went smoothly since. Until now.
In Fe Central State Marauders clothes bruary 2019, the NCAA suspended him two years because of allegations a guardian accepted money in exchange for his commitment. He played no games that year. The following season, in 2019-20, because a successful appeal saw the penalty reduced, he was part of one of KU’s most promising teams. The Jayhawks were 15-3 when they got into an awful brawl with rival Kansas State. DeSousa wa Alabama vs. Auburn Rivalry Jerseys s suspended 12 games by the Big 12 Conference. This was by far the longest punishment for any of the players involved.
He did not appear in a game again that season, and he left the program that October citing personal issues.
This isn't really a happy story so far, is it? My goodness.

Well, it has a happy ending.
DeSousa chose to transfer to Chattanooga last summer, and he has started 24 games for the Mocs as they dominated the Southern Conference and added an NCAA bid through the league tournament. DeSousa is averaging 11.1 points and 4.6 rebounds in 20 minutes per game.
“I think it was the very first practice; I remember telling the guys in the locker room: You think playing ball is fun?” DeSousa told reporters after the Mocs clinched their bid. “Just make it to the NCAA Tournament. You’ll have a lot more fun.”

Best first-round game
No. 8 Seton Hall vs. No. 9 TCU. Each side is loaded with toughness. Each side had to fight through an amazingly difficult, deep conference. Each side now surely must be delighted to be facing a rugged team that seems to be a mirror image.
The Pirates and Horned Frogs ooze toughness and fight for every inch around the lane. It may be that the winner is likely to be eliminated by top seed Arizona, but don’t expect either to be eager to leave this tournament.
Seeded too high
No. 2 Villanova. It was only by a line – or just two spots on the NCAA seed list. The Wildcats enjoyed a tremendous 2021-22 season, but they finished the regular season with only a 7-6 record against Quad 1 opponents. There were lots of other items that made them worthy of a protected seed, but not this high with that piece of information so obvious.
Of the other seven teams on the top two seed lines, none was a single game over .500, only Kentucky was just two games over and they averaged more Endicott College shirt than 4 games over. Villanova’s best victory on the NET scale was against No. 8 Tennessee; they had only two more victories against top-20 opponents.
Villanova deserves plenty of acclaim for its excellence, but not this specific designation.

Seeded too low
No. 3 Tennessee. The Vols are the only team in the tournament with four victories against teams on the top two seed lines: two against Kentucky, one against Auburn and the other against Arizona. How does that warrant a 3 seed?
The Vols were 11-7 in games against Quad 1 opponents. Indeed, Villanova had a head-to-head advantage, but if the committee wanted to introduce that criterion, wouldn’t they be oblig UNC vs. Duke Rivalry Gear ated also to use it in College Lacrosse shirt a seed debate between eventual No. 2 Kentucky and No. 1 Kansas? The Wildcats visited Allen Fieldhouse in January and left with an 18-point victory.
The committee also contradicted itself in regards to seeding methodology. Three weeks in advance of Selection Sunday, when Tennessee was under .500 against Quad 1 opponents and Wisconsin was six games over, the Vols were presented a No. 3 seed and Badgers a No. 4.
Wisconsin went 4-2 since; one of the wins delivered a sweep of Purdue, but one of the losses was against lowly Nebraska. The Vols lost that afternoon at Arkansas but subsequently won seven in a row, including over Auburn, Kentucky and Arkansas. And they got a No. 3?
No. 12 UAB over No. 5 Houston. I wonder how much Houston got out of putting another 157 minutes on its starters legs in the American title game Sunday against Memphis. The Cougars were able to get a W over Memphis following a season sweep by the Tigers. And they received a trophy and a chance to celebrate.
This is a team that has played months without two of its leading scorers, though. The Cougars have fought tenaciously to earn the AAC double – both regular-season and tournament championships. But they still enter the tournament with a 2-3 record against the league’s only other high-end teams.
UAB is a very effective offensive team that excels at shooting from long distance and scored more than 80 points in each of its three league tournament teams. The Blazers can get this one.

Best potential game
No. 2 Villanova vs. No. 3 Tennessee, Sweet 16. Let them settle the seed debate on the court. They’ll have bigger concerns, of course, should they get to this point in the tournament. At that stage, each will be just two victories away from the Final Four.
And each is good enough to belong.
Best potential player Evansville Purple Aces clothes matchup
Kofi Cockburn, Illinois vs. Christian Koloko, Arizona. Cockburn is one of the most physically forceful bigs in the past 20 years of college basketball and is a two-time Sporting News All-American. Koloko still is improving his game but is getting ever closer to dominance. Cockburn averaged better than 20 points and 10 rebounds.
It’s Koloko who intrigues the pro scouts more because mobile bigs are more in fashion in the league that bigs who play in the post and own the lane. It’s a different game now in the NBA. There still is great value in college, though, for those who overpower opponents down low. Can Cockburn do it in what would be a massive Sweet 16 game?
Get to know
Colorado State forward David Roddy. Not to take away anything from the wonderful panelists who voted for The Sporting News All-America team, but the ones with whom I was most pleased were the select few who included Roddy on their third teams.
There weren’t enough to get him honored, but this is one of the best unknown players in college basketball. He is 6-6, 255, not a prototypical basketball player. He is able to use the strength contained in that frame to outmuscle defenders and averages 19.4 points and 7.6 rebounds while shooting 57.4 percent from the floor.
Roddy was a three-sport athlete in high school. He was on the basketball team, obviously, and averaged 29.7 points for Breck School in Minneapolis. He played football, but not so obviously was the team’s quarterback and passed for 1,776 yards and 20 touchdowns as a senior. He placed second in the state in the Columbia College of Missouri Cougars shirt shot put and won the state title in the discus.
There’s no one quite like him in college hoops.
EXPERT PICKS: DeCourcy (Arizona) | Bender (Kentucky) | Fagan (Gonzaga) | Pohnl (Arizona)
Don’t be surprised if …
Loyola finds its way to advance again.
The Ramblers are playing an Ohio State team that has been missing key forward Kyle Young and lately has turned to veteran transfer Joey Brunk, who only had gotten double-figure minutes three times before he stepped in against Ohio State and stunned many with 18 points and 6 rebounds in 32 minutes.
It’s remarkable, but the Buckeyes aren’t winning with him. The Buckeyes topped 70 points only one time in the past five.
There really won’t be one. This region is going 1-2-3-4 to the Sweet 16. It might get more unpredictable there.
Final Four pick
Arizona. In a bracket loaded with teams whose flaws are obvious and difficult to disguise, Arizona stands as the one team that is difficult to pick apart. They guard the rim beautifully. They run excellent offense. The shoot it not great, but well enough. They have just enough depth.
What they do not have is an easy region. Every one of the top four teams is capable of reaching the Final Four. The problem for the other three, though, is they are grouped with Arizona.
