Jim Harbaugh will stay at Michigan, but where will the program go from here?

The university announced a five-year extension with Harbaugh on Wednesday, an expected formality that runs through 2026. That closed the book on an unexpected offseason where Harbaugh interviewed for the Minnesota Vikings job, lost both coordinators and stalled the momentum from a break-through 2021 season.

Charles Woodson, who won the Heisman Trophy in 1997 and led Michigan to its last national championship, gives an honest assessment of what most of the Wolverines faithful feel right now.

"I think it was good for him to stay at the university," Woodson told SN's Karisa Maxwell. "It wasn't good when he took the interview with the Vikings, and he came back and said that he was no longer going to look at the NFL, which I think he kind of had to say."

Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel told the Associated Press, "I'm very happy" about Harbaugh's return. That also feels like something he kind of had to say.

After all, Harbaugh took a pay cut after a disastrous 20020 season and now has a renegotiated contract. So, no more talk about money or the NFL for the next five years. The clumsy nature of the entire episode still stands.

"He had us in a great place this year," Woodson said. "He fielded a great team, won a Big Ten championship and made it into the playoffs. We were in a good place."

Harbaugh, who is 61-24 since taking over at Michigan in 2015, did find that happy place in 2021. The Wolverines broke a decade-long drought against rival Ohio State with a 42-27 victory. Michigan won its first Big Ten championship since 2004, but those accomplishments were tempered by a jarring 34-11 loss to Georgia in the College Football Playoff semifinal.

If Harbaugh left for the NFL at that point, it woul Florida State Seminoles Jerseys d have made sense. Instead, Harbaugh reportedly cut off communication with the Michigan athletic department and looked at several NFL jobs. Harbaugh told recruits he had NFL interest. He interviewed with the Vikings on National Signing Day and reportedly did not receive an offer. It doesn't matter who broke that engagement off.

Mike Macdonald, the defensive coordinator who crafted a top-10 unit that allowed 17.4 points per game in 2021, returned to the Baltimore Ravens. Josh Gattis, the offensive coordinator who won the Broyles Award, left for the same position with the Miami Hurricanes.

Gattis didn't just leave. According to ESPN's Tom Van Haaren, Gattis sent a text to some Michigan players voicing his displeasure for the administration.

Michigan hired Jesse Minter, another former Ravens assistant who was Vanderbilt's defensive coordinator last season, to replace Macdonald. Offensive line coach Sherrone Moore and quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss were promoted to co-offensive coordinators.

"A lot of things are still in place with some changes," Woodson said. "I think it's good for us to have continuity and our same culture in place and go forward."

Call it halftime in the Harbaugh era, and this was the longest halftime ever. There still is a lot of work to do in Ann Arbor in the present tense, and Harbaugh created more work for himself.

Under Harbaugh, the Wolverines are 1-5 against Ohio State, 1-5 in bowl games and never closed the national championship gap with the SEC powerhouses Georgia and Alabama after a ballyhooed satellite c NCAA Crewneck SweatJerseys amp tour of 2016. The transfer portal and NIL are n NCAA Crewneck Sweatshirt ew long-term challenges for Harbaugh, and the program needs to churn out more elite N Alabama vs. Auburn Rivalry Jerseys FL College Lacrosse Jerseys talent.

They have taken a few steps in that direction under Harbaugh. From 2008-15, the Wolverines had three first-round picks and 24 NFL Draft picks. Since 2016 under Harbaugh, Michigan totaled six first-round picks and 39 draft picks. That doesn't include this year's draft, which could have the No. 1 pick in Aidan Hutchinson.

It's been a slower process, but the Buckeyes will not slow down. Will the Wolverines keep up? The 2022 season comes with a quarterback question. Will Harbaugh stick with Cade McNamara or hand the keys to five-star recruit J.J. McCarthy, who played most of the second half against Georgia? That is the first huge decision that sets the tone for the next five years, and it could impact recruiting along the way.

Michigan is a College Football Playoff contender, but it isn't a national championship contender yet. It might take another full five years to get there.

Does Harbaugh have enough patience for that? Does Manuel have enough patience for Harbaugh? Where will that go from here? Those questions come with easy answers.

No more talk about money. No more talk about the NFL. No more plot twists that impact Michigan's standing on the recruiting trail. The focus needs to be building on a Big Ten champ College Cold Weather shirt ionship and proving it wasn't a one-hit wonder against the Buckeyes.

"I'm sure there are some families saying, 'Hey, what's he going to do?'" Woodson said. "He came out and made the statement, ‘I am no longer going to look for the NFL.' You kind of have to take these coaches at their word until they do something different. Hopefully he sticks around."
