Actor Amol Parashar is currently riding high on the success of not one, but two back-to-back OTT releases — Kull and Gram Chikitsalay. Audiences and critics alike are applauding his compelling performances in both series, which showcase a striking contrast in character and tone. As conversations grow around his impressive range as an actor, Amol opens up about how this momentum was never the result of a strategic plan — just a stroke of serendipitous timing.
"A lot of things are happening all at once. Two OTT shows got released — it wasn’t planned that they’d come out together. It just happened that way. There were other things that lined up too. One Friday, Kull was released. The next Friday, Gram Chikitsalay came out. And the Friday after that, one of my YouTube videos dropped. I’ve also started performing live again. I had planned these things earlier, but I never expected everything to happen at once."
Despite the whirlwind, Amol has managed to stay grounded. "I’ve been patting myself on the back a little — a lot is going on, but I’ve been handling it quite well. If someone had asked me three months ago how I would manage, even I wouldn’t have known. But so far, things are going smoothly. I just hope I don’t jinx it!"
Interestingly, though the releases came close together, the filming schedules were spaced out — Kull was shot in April–May last year, while Gram Chikitsalay was filmed in October–November. "Luckily, the shows were released close to each other, but the shoots weren’t that close. There was a decent gap. Kull was physically demanding. Abhimanyu, the character I play, is nothing like me. When someone is the complete opposite of you, it takes time to build that."
He goes on to reflect on the psychological effort involved in portraying Abhimanyu in Kull, and the contrasting simplicity of Prabhat in Gram Chikitsalay."I think Abhimanyu is the most morally flawed character I’ve played so far. And Prabhat is probably the kindest. Playing Prabhat didn’t need much planning. But with Abhimanyu, I had to figure out why he is the way he is. People who do bad things often don’t think they’re bad — they believe they’re right. Understanding his logic took time."
