At the trailer launch of his upcoming film Crazxy in Mumbai on Monday, Sohum Shah shared insights into his journey, his passion for filmmaking, and his experience working on different projects, including the critically acclaimed Tumbbad.
Sohum took a trip down memory lane, mentioning the long wait that Tumbbad had before making its way to the big screen. “Six years ago, we launched the Tumbbad trailer, and now, after six years, our next film is finally releasing,” Sohum remarked. “It took a little longer, but time is what we needed. We started working on Crazxy in 2022, and it’s releasing today in 2025.”
Comparing Tumbbad to Crazxy, Sohum made it clear that the two projects were quite different in tone and style. “Crazxy is a one-day film, and there are no similarities between the two. Don’t expect the same from Crazxy as you did from Tumbbad,” he said. “In Tumbbad, we tried something new, and with Crazxy, it’s the same approach.” The unpredictability of Tumbbad, where the audience never knew what was coming next, is something Sohum emphasized as being a hallmark of Crazxy too. “In Tumbbad, you never knew what was going to happen. With Crazxy, it’s the same. The ending will leave you wondering,” he said.
Reflecting on the distinctiveness of his films, Sohum recalled the response to Tumbbad, where some viewers might not have immediately connected with it, but they could appreciate that it was something new and innovative. “When you watch Tumbbad, you may not like the film, but one thing was certain – you would get to see something new,” he said. “That’s the same promise Crazxy holds. When you walk out of the theater, you’ll say you’ve never seen anything like this in Indian cinema.”
Sohum’s passion for filmmaking is evident in his approach to his work. “I make films for my passion,” he shared. “If I don’t make something new and different, then I don’t enjoy it. It’s all about creating something that hasn’t been seen before.”
Crazxy written and directed by Girish Kohli is all set to hit the cinemas on 28 February 2025.
