In an era where social media numbers often dominate conversations around casting and popularity, actor Anjum Batra offers a refreshingly grounded perspective. Known for his impactful performances in Amar Singh Chamkila and the web series Maamla Legal Hai, the actor believes that talent and suitability for a role matter far more than follower counts.

During a recent interaction, Anjum addressed the growing obsession with social media metrics in the entertainment industry. Sharing his candid thoughts, he said, “My belief is that, yes, that element probably does exist somewhere; some people might indeed place importance on how many followers you have. But take me as an example: if you look at my follower count on Instagram—I’m walking around with, what, 50 or 60 thousand followers? Yet, if followers were the deciding factor, then someone else entirely would be playing the role of 'Tikki' in Amar Singh Chamkila, and someone else entirely would be playing the lead in Kaamyaab or Mintu in Maamla Legal Hai”

He further emphasized that credible filmmakers prioritize authenticity over online popularity. According to him, “It isn’t just a "followers’ game, the good, sensible, and mature filmmakers—or those creating these kinds of series and shows—I don't believe they let that factor influence them very much. For them, if you fit the character—if you embody the role—and if you are a truly talented artist, then you will get the opportunity to play that character.”

The conversation also turned toward the level of competition in the industry, which many believe has intensified with time. However, Anjum offered a nuanced take, pointing out that while competition exists, opportunities have also expanded significantly.

Reflecting on this, he said, “Competition has always been intense. In fact, back in the day—the generation that preceded ours—the competition was arguably even fiercer because there simply weren't that many platforms available. Television, relatively speaking, has only really taken off in the last few years. Before that, it was strictly films, wasn't it? Right?”

“So, if you think about it, imagine the level of competition those folks had to face. For us—actors of my generation—I do feel there is competition, but at the same time, there are just as many platforms available. We’re talking about OTT now; look at how many television channels exist! Look at the sheer number of shows being produced—both on TV and across the various OTT platforms. There are so many different, distinct names and services within the OTT landscape alone. So, personally, I don't think it’s really that big of an issue.”

Anjum Batra has steadily carved a niche for himself with versatile roles across films and streaming platforms. His portrayal of Lakhmir “Mintu” Singh Balli in Maamla Legal Hai particularly struck a chord with audiences, further cementing his position as a dependable performer who prioritizes craft over hype.

At a time when follower counts often grab headlines, Anjum’s perspective is a reminder that, in the long run, it is still talent, conviction, and the ability to bring characters to life that truly matter in the world of storytelling.
