At the trailer launch of Mere Husband Ki Biwi in Mumbai on Saturday, director Mudassar Aziz shared his thoughts on the importance of comedy in cinema, the role of relationships in comedy, and how his film brings both humor and depth to the screen. Aziz highlighted the significance of blending Hindi and Urdu to craft a comedic narrative that feels authentic to everyday conversations.
Aziz began by reflecting on how the film came together, crediting producer Vashu Bhagnani for sparking the idea. "It all began with a very interesting discussion. Vashu, as we all know, is the stalwart, if not the godfather, of this genre. I don’t know why he was making action films, but this company—Biwi Number 1, Hero Number 1—is known for comedy. When he came to discuss this film, he wanted to revisit this zone, and brainstorming with him didn’t take me much. I thrive on writing comedy. His creative ability in this genre is truly remarkable."
Speaking about the heart of the film, Aziz explained that the charm of any relationship often lies in the playful conflict that keeps it alive. “The flavor of any relationship comes from its arguments. If a relationship is only sweet, it becomes vanilla, and it’s important to find the chaos that keeps things interesting."
Aziz then shifted focus to a broader reflection on the genre of comedy itself, pointing out that it doesn’t always get the credit it deserves. "For decades, I’ve believed that comedy doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. When it comes to film awards or remembering iconic movies, there’s a big difference. Comedy is often left out of the awards list. But when you sit with your family and recall your favorite films, it’s always comedy that stands out. I consider myself lucky that if even a small smile comes from my writing, then I’ll keep doing it."
