Magnolia Pictures has just dropped the official trailer for Sister Midnight, a darkly comedic, audacious debut feature from London-based Indian artist and filmmaker Karan Kandhari. Starring the brilliant Radhika Apte in a role unlike any she’s taken on before, the film explores the chaotic journey of Uma, a rebellious small-town misfit who finds herself completely out of place in the bustling city of Mumbai.
In Sister Midnight, Uma arrives in Mumbai with hopes of fitting into a more traditional domestic life, only to quickly discover that she is utterly unsuited for life as a housewife. Confronted by nosy neighbors and overwhelmed by the oppressive noise and heat of the city, Uma decides to break free from the suffocating expectations of her life and carve out her own path. With a mix of bold, unpredictable moments and dark humor, the film offers a fascinating exploration of a woman’s quest for freedom and self-discovery.
The film features a strong supporting cast, including Ashok Pathak, Chhaya Kadam, and Smita Tambe, who add depth to this layered and thought-provoking narrative. Sister Midnight premiered at the prestigious 2024 Cannes Film Festival in the Directors' Fortnight sidebar, generating significant buzz for its strikingly original storytelling and Apte's powerhouse performance.
Produced by Alastair Clark, Anna Griffin, and Alan McAlex, Sister Midnight will hit theaters in May 2025, thanks to Magnolia Pictures. With its mix of sharp wit, raw emotion, and audacious storytelling, this film is set to be a major talking point and a standout feature for audiences in the coming year.
