In a proud moment for Indian cinema, Bayaan, a hard-hitting police procedural thriller headlined by Huma Qureshi, is all set to have its world premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2025. Directed by Bikas Ranjan Mishra, Bayaan has earned the rare distinction of being the only Indian film selected in TIFF’s Discovery section this year—a space known for championing emerging global voices and breakthrough narratives.
Bayaan is more than a thriller—it’s a story deeply rooted in today’s social and political currents. The narrative follows a woman entangled in the dark labyrinth of power, institutional suppression, and personal conviction. Huma Qureshi steps into the role of a justice system insider who must confront the very structures meant to silence her.
This marks director Bikas Ranjan Mishra’s second feature film. Known for Chauranga, Mishra returns with a compelling exploration of societal transition and quiet defiance. Bayaan was developed under the Global Media Makers (GMM) program by Film Independent in Los Angeles, where Mishra was mentored by top Hollywood creatives including Chernobyl showrunner Craig Mazin.
The film is a joint effort by Platoon One Films and Summit Studios, with international co-production support from Switzerland-based Guidant Films. Producers Shiladitya Bora, Kunal Kumar, Anuj Gupta, and Madhu Sharma have backed the project, with Huma Qureshi herself serving as an Executive Producer—further underscoring her belief in the story’s message and global relevance.
Bayaan features an ensemble cast including veteran actors Chandrachur Singh, Sachin Khedekar, and Paritosh Sand, alongside fresh talents like Vibhore Mayank, Swati Das, and Aditi Kanchan Singh.
Supported by the Hubert Bals Fund of the International Film Festival Rotterdam, Bayaan is already generating buzz as a standout Indian entry on the international film circuit. TIFF’s Discovery section has historically served as a launchpad for globally celebrated directors, and Bayaan is poised to continue that legacy.
With its strong thematic undercurrents, stellar performances, and international development backing, Bayaan represents the rising wave of Indian independent cinema ready to engage with global audiences. As the film heads to Toronto this September, the spotlight is firmly on Huma Qureshi, Bikas Ranjan Mishra, and a team unafraid to tell bold, uncompromising stories.
