Forget roses on Valentine’s Day — The Roses are bringing thorns, chaos, and deliciously dysfunctional domestic drama to the big screen this summer. Searchlight Pictures has dropped the first official trailer for The Roses, a sharp, savage relationship comedy directed by Jay Roach, and starring a powerhouse cast led by Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman.
A reimagining of the 1989 cult-classic The War of the Roses (based on Warren Adler’s novel), the film dives into the disintegration of a seemingly perfect marriage. On the outside, Ivy (Colman) and Theo Rose (Cumberbatch) have it all — adorable children, enviable careers, the kind of house that gets featured in architecture magazines. But behind the façade? The cracks are showing... and then exploding.
As Theo’s professional life spirals and Ivy’s star continues to rise, the once-golden couple devolves into bitter rivals in a hilariously escalating battle of egos, ambition, and wildly passive-aggressive showdowns. Think flying crockery, verbal jabs with Shakespearean bite, and legal threats served with a smile.
Penned by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Tony McNamara (The Favourite, Poor Things), the film blends razor-sharp satire with moments of emotional gut-punch, as the Roses trade love for loathing. Rounding out the all-star ensemble are Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Kate McKinnon, Belinda Bromilow, Sunita Mani, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, and Zoë Chao — each one bringing their comedic A-game to this deliciously uncomfortable domestic war zone.
