In a candid reflection on the evolving landscape of Indian cinema, veteran filmmaker Suneel Darshan expressed his concerns about the growing disconnect between actors and their audiences. Known for his work on films like Inteqam, Lootere, Ajay, and Barsaat, Darshan believes that this gap isn't due to the actors' changing clothing styles or on-screen personas but rather a deeper issue tied to the identity of the Indian film industry. According to Darshan, the core of the disconnect lies in the transformation of Hindi cinema into "Bollywood."

Speaking about this shift, Darshan said, “Disconnect doesn’t come from your clothes, it comes from your thoughts. I feel a cruel tragedy took place with the Indian film industry, and that is, somehow our Hindi film industry is labeled as Bollywood.” He attributes the rise of the "Bollywood" term to a significant turning point in the late 90s, a time when Indian cinema began to look towards Hollywood for influence. According to Darshan, the adoption of this label inadvertently positioned Indian films as a “cheap version of Hollywood,” which led to a loss of the cultural connection that once defined the golden era of Hindi cinema.

In the past, icons like Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, and Vinod Khanna shared a unique bond with their audiences. They weren’t just celebrated for their acting skills; their styles, mannerisms, and overall presence resonated deeply with the culture and emotions of the masses. These actors became symbols of the times, and their connection to the audience was more than just surface-level. However, with the commercialization of the industry and the increasing influence of Western standards, many believe that this connection has eroded over the years.

Darshan’s comments highlight a significant issue that has gained attention among industry veterans. The film industry's desire to mirror Hollywood has led to the rise of star personas that often feel disconnected from the cultural roots of the Indian audience. While Bollywood has undoubtedly gained international recognition, the essence of Indian cinema—the emotional depth, cultural authenticity, and relatability—seems to be fading. This shift has resulted in audiences feeling increasingly distanced from the stars they once adored.

As Suneel Darshan prepares for his comeback with Andaaz 2, a socio-romantic film starring Aayush Kumar, Aakaisha Vats, and Natasha Fernandez, he hopes to rekindle the connection between actors and audiences.
