Focus Features has dropped the second trailer for Bugonia, the latest mind-bending creation from acclaimed director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite, Poor Things). A surreal blend of sci-fi, satire, and psychological thriller, Bugonia stars Emma Stone as a powerful tech CEO who becomes the target of a bizarre conspiracy—and possibly something far stranger.
Based on the cult 2003 South Korean film Save the Green Planet! by Jang Joon-hwan, Bugonia reimagines the story in a distinctly Lanthimos style. The plot follows two increasingly paranoid conspiracy theorists—played by Jesse Plemons and newcomer Aidan Delbis—who kidnap Stone’s character, believing she’s not only an alien in disguise but also orchestrating the destruction of Earth. What unfolds is a twisted, darkly comic interrogation of power, delusion, and the thin line between madness and truth.
The trailer gives off serious Lanthimos energy: off-kilter dialogue, sharp visuals, and an uneasy tension simmering beneath deadpan performances. Emma Stone, a frequent Lanthimos collaborator, shifts between terrifying and tragically misunderstood, while Plemons adds his signature intensity to the unraveling logic of the captors. Rounding out the ensemble are Stavros Halkias and Alicia Silverstone in roles that remain shrouded in mystery—though glimpses hint at cults, corporate secrets, and possibly a larger intergalactic plot.
With a script by Succession writer Will Tracy, Bugonia looks to balance its sci-fi setup with biting social commentary. Is it about alien invasion, or human paranoia? Capitalism, or connection? In classic Lanthimos fashion, the answers may not come easy—but the questions are bound to be thrilling.
