Acclaimed actress Tillotama Shome has issued a public alert after discovering she’s the latest target of an online impersonation scam. The Paatal Lok and Delhi Crime star took to Instagram to share a disturbing screenshot from WhatsApp, revealing that someone has been using her identity to approach people under false pretenses. The impersonator even used a still from her Bengali film Shadowbox (Baksho Bondi) as their display picture to appear more convincing.
In a candid post, Shome clarified that the number being used to message people is not hers and that she has no connection to the activity. “This is not my number,” she wrote. “The photo being used as the DP is of our film @bakshobondifilm. It was since removed. To whoever you may be, please don’t use my name to ask the people I know for things. STOP.” Her message has sparked concern and support from followers, many of whom praised her for quickly calling out the scam.
Tillotama is known for her thoughtful, powerful performances in both mainstream and indie cinema, including Angrezi Medium, The Night Manager, Lust Stories 2, and more recently, her role as a no-nonsense SP in Paatal Lok. The impersonation incident comes at a time when celebrities are increasingly becoming targets of digital scams, with fraudsters exploiting their public image to manipulate others online.
While the photo has reportedly been removed, the actress's timely warning serves as a reminder to fans to stay cautious and verify messages, even when they appear to be from familiar faces. As online impersonation grows more sophisticated, public figures like Tillotama Shome speaking out helps shine a light on the importance of digital vigilance.
