As fans celebrate #6YearsOfKalank, Dharma Productions took to social media to honor the film, calling it “a love story etched in our hearts forever.” Released in 2019, Kalank was an ambitious period romantic drama set against the backdrop of pre-independence India. Directed by Abhishek Varman and produced by Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta, and Sajid Nadiadwala, the film brought together an ensemble cast of some of Bollywood’s finest, including Aditya Roy Kapur, Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, and Sonakshi Sinha.
Visually stunning and rich in grandeur, Kalank stood out for its breathtaking cinematography, opulent production design, and Pritam’s soulful soundtrack. Songs like “Ghar More Pardesiya” and the title track “Kalank” became instant classics, with Arijit Singh winning Best Male Playback Singer and Remo D’Souza earning accolades for Best Choreography at the 65th Filmfare Awards. Despite high expectations and a star-studded lineup, Kalank underperformed at the box office, grossing around ₹146.31 crore. It was termed a box office bomb, though it did manage to recover its budget. Critics lauded the film’s visual storytelling but were less impressed with its screenplay, length, and direction. Nevertheless, over the years, Kalank has found a niche fan base who appreciate its aesthetic appeal and emotional depth.
Six years later, Kalank remains a topic of discussion for its bold attempt to blend grandeur with emotion.
