Apple TV just dropped the trailer for Murderbot, and if you’ve ever wanted to watch a socially awkward, soap-opera-loving robot try really hard not to care about humans (and fail spectacularly), this is your moment. Based on Martha Wells’ beloved Hugo and Nebula Award-winning series, Murderbot blends sci-fi thrills with snarky comedy and existential angst — basically, it’s your new favorite genre-bending binge.
The show stars Alexander Skarsgård as the titular Murderbot, a self-aware security construct who’s hacked its own governor module to gain free will — not to take over the world, but to binge watch future soap operas and avoid eye contact. But when an assignment involving squishy, emotional humans goes sideways, Murderbot has to pretend to be just another rule-following mech... all while secretly saving the day (ugh, feelings). The stellar cast also features David Dastmalchian, Noma Dumezweni, Sabrina Wu, Tattiawna Jones, Akshay Khanna, and Tamara Podemski.
Created by Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz and directed by Toa Fraser, Murderbot brings dry wit, high-stakes action, and philosophical robo-angst to the screen in a way that’s equal parts thrilling and hilarious. It’s Westworld meets The Office, with a little Black Mirror and a lot of “why are humans like this?” energy.
Set to premiere on May 16, 2025, Murderbot is already shaping up to be the most relatable AI character since WALL·E — just with more sarcasm, explosions, and existential dread. If you like your sci-fi with lasers, laughs, and low-key emotional crises, this one’s a must-add to your watchlist.
