Veteran actor Anupam Kher, known for his prolific work in Indian cinema, recently left audiences teary-eyed and inspired as he recalled a deeply personal story from his early days in Mumbai during the launch of his new directorial, Tanvi The Great. Amidst all the glitz and celebration of his second directorial film, it was Kher’s raw honesty that truly stole the spotlight.
Speaking at the launch event, Kher shared, “On 3rd June 1981, I came to this city with only ₹37 in my pocket. I had no home, no food, and slept on the streets. But this city—Mumbai—gave me everything.” The actor, who has now worked in over 540 films, credited the city’s spirit and kindness for transforming his life. “It’s a large-hearted city. If you keep working hard, Mumbai notices. God gives opportunities, but this city gives you the courage to chase them.”
He also narrated a bittersweet memory from his struggling days. “I once went to a producer named Sohan Lal Kanwar with a photo of myself. There was also a writer in the room named Ram Kelkar. They looked at my photo and kept saying, ‘Oh, what a good-looking guy! He looks different.’ And I thought maybe I’ll finally get some work. But then they pointed to the person standing next to me in the photo and asked, ‘Who’s he?’ That was my friend… but I said he died,” Kher added, pausing with a smile. “The guy was Anand Desai, God bless him.”
In true Kher fashion, the story wasn’t just for laughs—it was a message to dreamers everywhere. “You can come here with nothing, and still build everything,” he said. With Tanvi The Great, Kher is not just making another film—he’s nurturing new talent, paying it forward, and proving that dreams, no matter how big or small, are always welcome in Mumbai.
