At the trailer launch of his highly anticipated film Akaal, Gippy Grewal, the director and lead actor of the film, shared his journey and passion behind creating this project. The film marks a significant milestone in his career, as it is the first film that blends both Hindi and Punjabi elements.
Speaking at the launch event in Mumbai, Gippy reflected on the years of hard work and dedication that went into bringing Akaal to life. He began by describing the dream every filmmaker has when starting a new project: "When we make any film, there is a dream in everyone's mind that ‘I will do this, I will do that.’ This film is also a huge dream for me. It has been years in the making.
Actually, when I first thought about getting into direction, my very first film idea was to make this in 2016. But at that time, we didn’t have the finances. I started with a small film to gain experience. I tried it out, and that’s when I realized whether I could even make it or not. Back then, we made Ardaas and launched our production house, Humble Motion Pictures. From then till now, we’ve been making films, and finally, we have made this one"
Gippy also spoke about the character of Akaal, which is based on a fictional character set during the period after Maharaja Ranjit Singh's reign in Punjab. He explained how the film explores the events in Punjab in 1840, with the central character of Akaal Singh inspired by the socio-political circumstances of that time: "The character of Akaal is a fictional one. It is set during the time after Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s reign, in 1840. We’ve created a fictional character based on what was happening in Punjab during that period. The character is fictional, but it is inspired by real events of that time."
The film Akaal promises to be an exciting addition to both the Hindi and Punjabi film industries, blending history and fiction in a compelling narrative. It is hitting the cinemas on April 10, 2025.
