Welcome Back is the sequel to Welcome, which released in 2007. Directed by Anees Bazmee, this movie which features John Abraham, Shruti Haasan, Nana Patekar, Anil Kapoor and Paresh Rawal in lead roles has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.
Welcome Back starts off with the grand entry of Uday Shetty and Majnu Pandey. Just as these dons start enjoying their reformed 'clean' lives as respectable members of society, there enters Babita aka Rajkumari Chandni (Ankita Shrivastava) and her gorgeous mother Poonam aka Maharani (Dimple Kapadia).
Even though they claim to be the princess and Maharani of Najafgadh, the actual fact remains that they are thugs of the highest order whose main motive is to con the rich men and siphon off their money. Unaware of their background, Uday and Majnu fall in love with the Rajkumari, so much so that there comes a situation when their best friendship is at stake.
Just when Uday and Majnu initiate their matrimonial meet with Rajkumari and Maharani, there enters Uday's 'poor' father (Nana Patekar in a double role), who 'thrusts' the responsibility of his daughter Ranjhana's (Shruti Haasan) marriage to Uday and Majnu. Seizing this opportunity, Maharani lays a condition that her 'princess' daughter's wedding with either Majnu or Uday will happen only after Ranjhana's wedding.
In the meantime, due to certain circumstances and situational misunderstandings, Ranjhana falls in love with Ajju bhai (John Abraham) who is a Mumbai based goon and also Dr. Ghungroo (Paresh Rawal)'s step son from Mrs. Ghungroo (Supriya Karnik). In order to create a good impression before Uday and Majnu, Ajju 'disguises' himself as a decent, sober, well-mannered guy when he comes to Dubai.
But when Uday and Majnu discover Ajju's true identity, hell breaks loose and they seek the help of the deadly Wanted Bhai (Naseeruddin Shah) in order to eliminate Ajju. Things take an unexpected u-turn when they realize that Wanted Bhai's only son (Shiney Ahuja) is not just a drug addict, but also blindly in love with Ranjhana.
Will the 'still-bachelors' Uday and Majnu ultimately find love, will they ever discover Maharani and Chandni's true identities, will it be Ajju or Wanted Bhai's son who will win over Ranjhana and a comedy of errors is what forms the rest of the film.
The performances by the lead cast are decent. Nana Patekar and Anil Kapoor are a super combo and they are the only reason, the first half is watchable. Welcome Back offers with some eye-catching locations, which are the only thing to watch out for. Surveen Chawla’s item number is also major asset of the film.
Anil Kapoor is hilarious with his lines and his chemistry with Nana is breath taking. The duo brings hilarious laughs and evoke decent entertainment. John is ok in his role. Shruthi is good as the troubled sister. Paresh Rawal does his supporting role well.
Major drawback of the film is the story as it does not contain any interesting and fresh stuff. The first half is entertaining, but the second half is boring and forces the audience to deviate the minds.
The romantic quotient between Shruthi and John is shown in a hurry and makes no sense. There are many logical errors in the film and climax lacks clarity. Unnecessary comedy and illogical scenes make the film out of place.
Music is just about Ok. While the screenplay is loose and confusing, the editing too is not at all up to the mark. A few scenes do not connect with each other and go haywire. Dialogues are fine, as a few one-liners sure make you laugh.
Director Anees Bazmee couldn’t manage to entertain his audience throughout the movie. It was only in the first half that the interest factor is kept alive, the second half completely lacks entertainment.
Welcome Back comes as a bit of a disappointment for the audience even though it has some experienced cast and crew. It does not have any such moments which were famous in the first part. Watch it only if you like crazy comedies and have nothing else to do.
