Movie Review

Rating :

Verdict : it's not a bad film but it also has nothing new to offer. ______________________________________________________________________

Arjun Kapoor started his journey in 2012 with Super Hit Ishqzaade followed by masala entertainer 'Gunday' , blockbuster hit '2 States' and a sweet film 'Finding Fanny'. After such versatile display of talent, Arjun returns back into the masala entertaining zone with his home production 'Tevar'. "Tevar" is a remake of Mahesh Babu and Bhumika Chawla's Blockbuster Telugu film "Okkadu" and Directed by Amit Sharma, apart from Arjun Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha and Manoj Bajpai also in lead role. So let's find out, whether 'Tevar' will add up as a another milestone for Arjun Kapoor to reach his super stardom or might join the long list of bad and weak remakes we have been recently witnessing in the name of popular masala entertainers.

The story of Tevar set in Agra, and revolves around Goonda Gajender Singh (Manoj Bajpayee), who falls in love with Radhika (Sonakshi Sinha). Even after rejecting his marriage proposal, Gajender keeps trying hard to woo Radhika.

Here enters an Agra boy Pintu Shukla (Arjun Kapoor), who is the son of the superintendent of police (Raj Babbar). Pintu is a Kabaddi player from Agra for whom his game is his life. The local lad plans to make it big as a Kabaddi player until he accidentally runs into Radhika (Sonakshi Sinha) who is being forcefully drawn into a marriage by the notorious Bahubali Gajendra Singh (Manoj Bajpai).

While Gajendra Singh is the whole and sole of the town Mathura and no one would dare go against him, Pintu with his kind attitude tries to save Radhika from Gajendra’s clutches and takes her and runs away., thus landing up into trouble. What at first begins as a rescue operation of Radhika, soon blossoms into a love story as Radhika and Pintu fall for each other.

But with Gajendra Singh being smitten by Radhika and his spoilt attitude of getting what he wants, Will Pinto be successful in saving Radhika from Gajender’s goons, or will he too will be a target of Gajender’s hatred? That forms the rest of the story.

Positive Points:-

Making a mass entertainer often proves to be a risk for filmmakers. The only thing that comes to stake while making this kind of cinema is the fact that the directors not only want to keep the audiences entertained for the whole show, but also make sure to not make them get bored for even an instant. And let us tell you that director Amit Sharma has been quite successful to come up with a decent film in this genre.

Another good part about the film is that it is fast paced and does not let the audience get bored during the course. Now another positive about the movie is that Sonakshi has finally shown her acting prowess. Arjun is decent in his act and playing a Salman fan, he tries hard to look and act like the superstar and he sure succeeds to an extent.

However, the cherry on the cake is the marvel in the name of Manoj Bajpayee. There is not doubt about the fact that the actor is a great performer, but he just knows no stopping. Raj Babbar as Pintu’s feisty dad is a treat.

Negative Points:-

The story is quite cliched. A damsel-in-distress, a macho hero, an incredible goon and a deprived father, has been tried and tested in the industry a lot many times before. The romantic quotient between Arjun and Sonakshi is shown in a hurry and makes no sense.

Even though Sonakshi has done a good job, the fact remains that portraying similar kind of roles may damper her image in the industry sometime.

Technical Points:-

Technically, Tevar is quite sound. The music album of the film is fine and the songs are placed at the right spot in the screenplay. Screenplay of the film is fast paced and to the point. Story may be a bit clichéd, but the plot is pretty likable. Cinematography by Laxman Utekar is brilliant, as he captures both the cities beautifully in his lens.

Being an ad filmmaker, Amit’s style of story-telling and execution of every scene is quite unique. Tevar is the remake of Telugu hit Okkadu and the director has made sure to add that desi touch of the North for the audience to connect easily. Editing is fine. The production design by Aparna Sud and the art direction by Amit Lad brings the streets of these cities alive.

Tevar is an upcoming Bollywood film directed by Amit Sharma and written by Gunasekhar. The film stars Arjun Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha and Manoj Bajpayee in lead roles. It is a remake of director Gunasekhar's 2003 Telugu film Okkadu, starring Mahesh Babu and Bhoomika Chawla. The film is scheduled for release on January 9, 2015
