Movie Review

Rating :

Verdict : Watch for Big B and Vidya Balan's performance

Kolkata becomes the fascinating, aptly antiquated backdrop after Sujoy Ghosh's 2012 released thriller Kahaani. With an interesting cast and based on the Korean film “Montage,”  Ribhu Dasgupta's TE3N creates lots of hope among the cinema goers. Here is our review.

Story : An eight-year-old girl is kidnapped and the police are clueless, because what looks like an ordinary crime turns out to be a meticulously planned abduction. It leaves the child’s justice-seeking grandfather John Biswas (Bachchan) in lurch, but he won’t accept defeat without a fight. He begins to probe into the matter but a police officer Sarita (Vidya Balan) and a pastor Martin Das (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) can make his task easy.

What's Hot : "TE3N" sucks you into its little universe of determination, tenacity and duplicity. Astutely created and Indianized (we have not viewed the first), it keeps the viewer tempted by its progressive addition of over a significant time span, and a planned flip-flop between the two separate investigations, with John not a part of what the cops are taking after and the other way around. The conclusion is layered however extremely persuading.

What's Not : However sometimes it missed opportunities. Because there are rousing actors in here, and there’s a real city to play it all out in. Kolkata is a perfect location for a film like this with its atmospheric patches and the iconic Howrah-Hooghly vistas, reminding you of producer Sujoy Ghosh’s far more engaging ‘Kahaani’, but how a man clad in a dark hoody ( in sultry Kolkata) manages to move around those streets so freely remains an unsolvable mystery.

The plot has an excessive amount of fluff, and the characters are all surface : Bachchan's sagging facial lines, Balan's stolid-cop-stepping—these carefully attracted diagrams point out themselves, yet don't manage the cost of us internal subtle elements.

Performances : A towering performance by Bachchan tops the film’s distinctions. He is so credibly weak, helpless, frail and yet determined, patient and resourceful in his own way. His eyes speak enough to convey his emotions, and his body language goes even beyond the 100 percent felt by them. This is Bachchan as he should be in his age and stature: “TE3N” is that able successor to his National Award-winning “Piku” that “Wazir” could not be at all.

Siddiqui is straight and sober, which will be a definite disappointment to his fans after his trio of brilliant performances last year in “Badlapur,” “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” and “Manjhi - The Mountain Man.” He is excellent as Martin, though the see-saw in the script between him as a cop and a church father is not really convincing. Balan is adequate in an ill-defined role. Sabyasachi Chakraborty (as the accused) and Padmavati Rao (as Bachchan’s tolerant wife) are effective. The supporting smaller roles are well done.

If you do decide to watch it, watch it for Bachchan’s performance, which without a doubt, is one of his bests and to see Vidya Balan finally kick some ass after a slew of unfortunate film choices.

After working day and night to live a mediocre life, Vivaan (Rajeev Khandelwal) and Siya Agasthi (Tena Desae) are thrilled to have won an all inclusive vacation to the exotic Fiji. Not only do they get to stay in a lavish hotel with a grand suite, the couple also receives an invitation for lunch to celebrate their wedding anniversary at one of the finest resorts in Suva, Fiji. The couple's excitement only increases when they meet the very suave Mr. Khan (Paresh Rawal) at the restaurant who gives them a chance to play a 'tell all truth' game for a mind boggling 21 crores.

The rules of the game are simple; answer 8 questions truthfully and complete the respected tasks and the money is all yours. Vivaan and Siya readily agree as they can take their winnings to Mumbai and live the life they both have always dreamed of. The game begins; Vivaan and Siya are off to a great start answering each question right as well as completing the tasks successfully. However the as they proceed, the questions and tasks get more and more personal. Each question ironically ties back to an important chapter of their lives. Vivaan and Siya have had enough and choose to quit the game.

One important rule they forgot which Khan reminds them of, quitting is not an option. They both realize that the game isn't really a game but the only way to survive is to complete the game. Who really is Khan? Will Vivaan and Siya survive the game and win 21 crores?
