Movie Review

Rating :

Verdict : Not too classy, not too massy. Watch it for Big B’s performance and different concept. Don’t expect the extra-ordinary. _________________________________________________________________________________________

‘Shamitabh’ film’s overall plot of dramatic events and co-incidental aspects might take you down memory lane to the stories of Manmohan Desai. This Friday’s release, Shamitabh, directed by ‘Cheeni Kum’ and ‘Paa’ director R Balki has been in the making since a couple of years. The concept of the film had been kept under wraps since the trailer launch with the directors and actors not willing to reveal much. The movie, starring Dhanush, Amitabh Bachchan and Akshara Haasan has stayed just like Balki’s other films, not too classy, not too massy. The film has a different and fresh concept overall but the traditional film clichés also exist.

The story begins with a mute man Danish’s (Dhanush) dream to become an actor. He’s seen enacting Bollywood scenes with full intensity as a school kid, wishes to go to Mumbai but his mother fakes illness to keep him in Igatpuri. Struggling for a day or two to meet directors, he meets Assitant Director Akshara Pandey (Akshara Haasan) who sees his potential on a mobile recording. With the help of her doctor father, she sends him to Finland to undergo a voice research programme to help him realize his dream.
In his quest for a suitable voice to deliver his dialogues, he finds ‘Sharaabi’ Amitabh Sinha (Amitabh Bachchan) in a shabby, drunken state lying on the road. Danish and Akshara try to convince him in his house (graveyard) and with a lot of resistance Amitabh consents. A star, Shamitabh, is born where Danish acts and Amitabh mouths his dialogues. Success goes to the head of both ‘Sha’ and ‘Amitabh’ of Shamitabh, and clash of egos takes over. They break-up, try individual ventures but both fail. Controversies, sensationalism, discerning journalists, brawls follow. Akshara tries to bridge the differences between them throughout and ‘Shamitabh’ sets out for a journey which doesn’t reach the finishing line.

Positive points:-

The performance of Amitabh Bachchan is the highlight of the film. His intense baritone, witty lines, egoistic and stubborn act as a ‘Sharaabi’ is brilliant. The effort of Dhanush pre-stardom is endearing. Akshara Haasan has a pleasant and distinct appearance and has come up with a fine debut. Two sets of scenes in the film stood out, one is the entire flashback tracking the life of Danish and other is the scene in the graveyard where Amitabh is being convinced to take up this job. The effort of Amitabh’s caretaker is also good. Cameos by some heavyweights like Rajkumar Hirani, Rohit Shetty, Rekha, Karan Johar add significantly to the film. And Rekha’s turn and glance when she hears Amitabh’s voice is the best scene of the film.

Negative points:-

At the same time the performances are inconsistent. Dhanush’s post-stardom act is few notches lower than his pre-stardom act. Akshara’s dialogue delivery and her accent in some scenes fail to connect. There’s too much of in-film advertising in the film.

The film draws a lot from earlier events, like the protagonist is again with a disability like Bachchan in ‘Paa’. Dhanush’s conductor-to-superstar part derives from his father-in-law Rajinikanth’s graph. Team forms, splits, individual projects fail then patch-up draws slightly from ‘Band Baaja Baaraat’. The romantic track between Danish and Akshara was lackluster. The sad climax doesn’t quite make you teary and might not connect with everyone. Perhaps they could’ve taken a safe route with ‘happily-ever-after’ climax.

Why Akshara generously helps a stranger or why Dhanush opens his mouth during ‘ghanta sharminda’ is perhaps what a detractor will identify.
Technical Points:-

The lyrics of the film are linked to the story of the film and are written well by Swanand Kirkire. But the music by Music Maestro Ilayaraja is strictly average. Cinematography by P.C. Sreeram is effective. The sound, costume, look designers and make-up department deserve praise as the film is shot on a large scale. Editing and writing could’ve been better.
Overall, it’s fresh and clichéd at the same time. You are likely to enjoy at least a few good moments watching this film laughing, smiling or getting entertained or just by being a witness to the storytelling.

Shamitabh is an upcoming Hindi film directed by R. Balki, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Dhanush and Akshara Haasan, in her debut, in the lead roles. The soundtrack and background score will be composed by Ilaiyaraaja while cinematography will be handled by P. C. Sreeram.

The first look of the lead actors Amitabh Bachchan and Dhanush were released on 23 July and 25 July 2014, respectively. Amitabh Bachchan had been reportedly seen sporting a rugged look and wearing shabby clothes which he found quite difficult to preserve throughout the shooting of the film. Amitabh Bachchan described the film as "novel, out of the ordinary and most challenging" and Shamitabh is "no different".  Amitabh Bachchan lent his voice to Dhanush who reprotedly played a deaf and mute junior artiste in the film.

Shmitabh became the first Bollywood film to be shot in the Finnish Laplands and in Helsinki The crew shot some scenes at the Seven Hills Hospital, the same place where Amitabh Bachchan underwent two abdominal surgeries and saw the birth of Aaradhya, his granddaughter.
